Apprentice Spotlight - Megan Denham

Megan Denham of Owen Mumford was awarded the Highly Commended certificate in the Polymer Apprentice of the Year Award 2020. The judges were impressed by her confidence and her technical ability

How did you get into the plastics industry?

I was attracted to the plastics industry as initially I did not know much about it but after researching it whilst searching for an apprenticeship, I realised how vast the industry is. It seemed like a good industry to get into as I felt that so many aspects of it sounded really interesting.

What was your very first role and where are you now?

My career has constantly moved forwards as Owen Mumford has put me through a lot of training and allowed me to be involved in many different areas of the business. This has enabled me to have a greater knowledge of the business operations and better understand the tooling process. I now have the role of Junior Engineer and am working towards a degree on day release with Coventry University.

What is your biggest achievement to date within your workplace?

My advice for young people starting out is to ask as many questions as possible and try to experience as many aspects of their business as possible, as it will help them to improve their knowledge and also find which area of the industry they like the best.

How do you feel the apprenticeship has helped you?

I like working in the plastics industry as I never find it boring and there are always lots of new opportunities and projects to get involved with. There is so much to learn and therefore it never gets boring.

Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?

I think in the next 5 years the plastic industry will be more evolved with advanced moulding machines that are capable of doing a lot more than they currently can.

I would like to add that I have enjoyed my apprenticeship so much and am excited to progress my career with Owen Mumford.
