BPF response to Environment Audit Committee’s Chinese Waste Import Ban Inquiry
Wednesday, 24 January 2018
In their response to the inquiry on the Chinese Waste Import Ban the BPF stated the need for the government to focus on incentivising the use of recycled content in products to drive the recycling market. It also said that standards are needed for feedstock material to improve quality as well as consistent collections. In the long term the BPF pointed out the opportunity the ban provides to invest in the UK’s recycling infrastructure and prevent the current reliance on export. One mechanism to do this is the split plastic packaging target which the recycling group have proposed for a number of years. This requires plastic packaging companies to get a higher percentage of the obligated companies’ evidence from Packaging Recovery Notes (PRN) rather than Packaging Export Recovery Notes (PERN).
