BPF Secures Government Plaudit for PVC

Business Minister, Mark Prisk MP has written to the BPF praising the UK PVC Industry’s contribution to the Vinyl 2010 recycling targets.

The letter was read out to a 400 strong delegation at this week’s PVC 2011 conference in Brighton by BPF’s Director General , Peter Davis, who chaired the opening sessions of the Conference where the 10 -Year programme and achievement  of the Vinyl 2010 Voluntary Committee were analysed.

Prisk said that the achievement was all the more impressive because of the long life of PVC building products and the recent economic difficulties in the construction sector.  He said that “initiatives such as these give me great cause for confidence in the industry’s future”.

Prisk’s optimism was echoed in the opening speech given by BPF Director-General, Peter Davis who said that the event, besides being a celebratory occasion marking the industry’s achievement and the “acceptance of PVC” presented an opportune moment to “chart the course for its future.”

He said, “We are going to look at business opportunities and applications across the world and demonstrate how PVC can help with growing global challenges such as Climate Change, waste and energy shortages, food supply, health issues and a rapidly growing population.”

Two major BPF projects were featured at the conference where Philip Law, BPF’s Public and Industrial Affairs Director unveiled the presentation the BPF is using to brief architects on the merits of plastic building in products.  This forms the centrepiece of BPF’s sponsorship of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Smart Materials Lecture Series which has now been communicated to over 500 architectural students in six architectural schools, up and down the UK, including Belfast, Edinburgh, Leeds, Birmingham and Sheffield.  Law said the success of the programme is encouraging the BPF to renew its sponsorship in 2011.

The BPF exhibition stand at the conference featured the array of posters developed by BPF’s Vinyl Group to communicate benefits of PVC to industrial users and consumer audiences.  Witty messages combined with stunning images underpin the campaign which is coordinated by BPF Senior Executive Sarah Plant.  ‘Plug in to PVC’ on electrical applications, ‘The reigning champions in PVC’ on drainage and ‘Bag for Life’ for blood bags, give a sense of the humour used to convey PVC’s essential role in serving society.
