BPF states UK plastics industry’s EU priorities

The British Plastics Federation (BPF) has released a document outlining the priorities for the UK plastics industry as the new UK-EU relationship emerges.

The document, entitled Securing the Future, highlights the importance of the plastics industry, stressing that it underpins many sectors in the UK economy, including automotive, aerospace, construction, energy, electrical and electronic, healthcare, agriculture and food distribution. It states how these sectors could not function effectively without plastics.

It is intended to help inform government and policy makers in the upcoming EU negotiations and was created following consultation with BPF members, including a membership-wide survey conducted in August.

BPF Director General Philip Law, states:

“It is important over the coming months and indeed years that the industry effectively communicates to government what its key priorities are. We will be working with our members to make sure the messages are heard as the negotiations with the EU begin to take place.” 

The BPF document identifies four main priorities, including free access to the single market, continued access to skilled workers, maintaining legislation compatible with the EU, and support for innovation and overseas business development. 

Philip Law recently announced that the BPF has also established a task force, chaired by Mike Boswell of Plastribution, to advise on issues as they arise. Law continues: 

“Due to the BPF’s broad membership base, the task force reflects the leading sectors within the industry, and will represent the voice of the UK plastics industry in the upcoming negotiations.”
