Margaret Bates, Executive Director, OPRL

Margaret Bates joined OPRL as Executive Director a year ago, previously she was Professor of Sustainable Wastes Management at the University of Northampton.  She has been involved in wastes management for 30 years and undertook her PhD on landfill microbiology.  She is a Chartered Waste Manager, an International Wastes Manager, a Chartered Environmentalist and a Fellow of IOM3. Margaret has travelled the world looking at waste issues and has advised governments, businesses and NGO on sustainable resource and waste management.

James Bull, Tesco

James is a change professional with a 25 year track record of delivering transformation initiatives across the Tesco business, currently leading the Packaging team; 
He is committed to removal, reduction, reuse and recycling of packaging used across the Tesco global supply chain, ensuring they only use packaging with a purpose and everything they use can be reused or recycled.

Tesco are focused on accelerating the exit of hard to recycle materials, increasing the use of recycled materials and helping customers make environmentally responsible decisions. They are working with industry to influence the improvement of retrieval and recycling in the UK moving towards progressively closed loop systems for packaging.


Linda Crichton, Defra

Since January 2018 Linda has been based at Defra where she jointly leads the work to reform the UK packaging producer responsibility regime. She moved across to Defra from WRAP where she held various positions since joining in 2004 to set up and manage WRAP’s local authority support programme and work on food waste collections.  Latterly, as head of Resource Management her responsibilities covered WRAP’s work in support of higher recycling including collections, recycling and material quality, the national behaviour change campaign Recycle Now and the local authority support programme.  During her time at WRAP she worked closely with Defra and represented WRAP on various Defra project boards.  Prior to WRAP, Linda worked in environmental consultancy for over 15 years leading studies relating to waste and the environment both in the UK and internationally.

Gert Coun, Sabic

Gert has over 30 year experience in the polymer industry. He was involved in R&D, Technical Service, Marketing and New Business Development in flexible & rigid packaging, Industrial Film, Building & Construction, Consumer Goods. He gathered specific expertise in developing sustainable solutions in food, cosmetic & hygienic packaging.

He currently manages globally innovation projects in the packaging market based on SABIC TRUCIRCLE™ solutions. Within his current role he is deeply involved in the launch of SABIC‘s most recent solutions based certified bio-based & circular polyolefins. He also manages several closed loop initiatives by using used plastics as new feedstock to produce new polymers for advanced applications.

Paul Davidson, Innovate UK

Paul Davidson joined UKRI in January 2020 as Challenge Director for the Smart Sustainable Plastic Packaging challenge fund. This £60 million Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund is designed to find ways of cutting waste in the supply chain, to develop new business models, and to create new sustainable recyclable materials.

Paul joined UKRI from SABIC where he was responsible for market development in Europe of its flexible packaging resins. As part of this he used his previous experience in plastics sustainability to drive both mechanical and chemical recycling solutions into the plastics packaging market.

Prior to joining SABIC, Paul spent 11 years at WRAP running various plastics recycling programmes including the development of food grade HDPE and PP recycling processes. Paul holds a first degree in Materials Science and Technology from Brunel University and a PhD in the processing of PET from Loughborough University

Tim Duret, Veolia

Tim has over 10 years of experience in the Recycling industry. He is an expert in recycling solutions. Tim has experience in composting, alternative fuels, biomass, recycling design, plastic and is a member of the OPRL Technical Advisory Committee. Tim's background also includes Agronomy with Environmental Technologies Masters.

Helen Jordan, British Plastics Federation

Helen is the Senior Recycling Issue Executive at the British Plastics Federation and has work with the BPF Recycling Group for over 4 years. The Recycling Group focus on issues such as PRN reform and legacy additives and are an active group of 50 members. Helen is currently working with a consultant on producing the BPF Recycling Roadmap. Previously Helen also looked after the Sustainability Committee within the BPF and ran Operation Clean Sweep (a programme to reduce plastic pellet loss from industry). Before working at the BPF Helen spent 7 years in local government working within the Waste and Recycling Team.

Jason Leadbitter, Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility Manager, Inovyn

Jason has approximately 30 years’ experience working within the PVC industry, his current role is Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility Manager with INOVYN.  He has an active European role in a number of Trade Associations especially on environmental and circular economy issues.  He is the current Chairman of the Controlled-Loop Recycling Committee of VinylPlus – the European PVC industry’s voluntary commitment and has recently been appointed Chair of the BPF’s Sustainability Committee.  
He received an Honours Degree in Materials Science and a PhD in Polymer Chemistry (Bradford University) as well as an Advanced Diploma in Sustainability from the University of Cambridge.  He is an International Speaker and Honorary Lecturer at several European Universities and Business Schools and is passionate about the importance of teaching science in student education. In 2013 he was awarded a gold medal from the BPF for services to the industry.  He is also a Chartered Environmentalist. 

Professor Michael Shaver, Professor of Polymer Science, Manchester University

Professor Michael Shaver (FRSC, FIMMM) is Professor of Polymer Science in the School of Natural Sciences at the University of Manchester where he leads initiatives insustainable polymers, plastics and materials for the Henry Royce Institute, the UK’s national advanced materials science centre. He is Director of the new Sustainable Materials Innovation Hub, supporting SMEs in Greater Manchester to make smart, sustainable material choices. He has published >100 papers, delivered >80 invited lectures and been recognised with a MacroGroup Young Polymer Scientist award, two Canada Foundation for Innovation Leadership Awards and Fellowships in the Young Academy of Scotland, Royal Society of Chemistry and Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining

Nick Smith, Covestro

Nick Smith is a senior manager in corporate projects at Covestro. He is currently in a leadership role in the company’s transformation program towards its vision of becoming fully circular.  A chemistry and business graduate, Nick has more than 20 years’ management experience in marketing and sales of chemicals to industry verticals ranging from building to furniture, from industrial vehicles to textiles, including ten years’ experience in Asia. Nick is passionate about sustainability and loves to work with partners of Covestro to help the transformation of industry and society. Nick is married and has four children
