BPF takes part in the Marine Conservation Society's Beach Watch survey

The British Plastics Federation’s (BPF) Director-General, Peter Davis, took part in a Beach Clean on Cramond beach near Edinburgh on Saturday 18th September organised by the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) as part of their ‘Beach Watch’ survey.

Peter Davis joined up to forty volunteers in cleaning and surveying marked out sections of the beach to see for himself what items were found; the rigour of the surveying method; and to improve the already strong links with the MCS.

Peter Davis said, “The MCS pointed out that 50% of the litter was left by visitors. And we found a wide variety of articles including many small plastic pieces such as bits of polystyrene cups, yogurt pots and insulation tape. Surprisingly there were a few plastic bags or bottles.”

On some scrub land behind the beach not surveyed and flooded during storms we found plastic pellets clear, yellow and blue – the first raw material – and also plastic ear bud sticks.

“There was certainly a large amount of small plastic pieces on the beach irresponsibly left by beach users and there is a dire need for greater provision of waste bins. For the plastics industry’s part we can do something to prevent loss of raw material down trains or in transit. I would urge BPF members to look at Operation Clean Sweep plastic pellet loss prevention and sign the company pledge," added Davis.
