Brexit: Logistics and Transport – what you need to know

Seacon (SG), a logistics and transport provider, which also offers warehousing services for a number of blue-chip, multi-national importers has been preparing for Brexit for over two years in order to support their customers in the arising issues.

Martin Phillips, the Commercial Director at Seacon (SG) addresses the main concerns over logistics related to Brexit: “During the last two years it's been a process of speaking to our customer base, sharing latest updates and trying our best to be as well informed as possible so we can properly support our clients.”

Our customer's concerns can be split into 3 categories:

  1. Delays in the Supply Chain that negatively affect the very quick stock flow our customers provide to their UK market (Approximately 1/3 of the 160k mt we handle each year is despatched to customers within 48 hrs of receipt).
  2. Unknown and increased costs, as a direct result of doing business in the UK, that cannot be passed on.
  3. A lack of established processes to handle Customs matters. A lot of our customers are blue chip, multi nationals, with slow moving internal mechanisms, making any last minutes changes difficult to achieve.

From our side, we initially spoke with various Customs Agencies and shared what we learned with our customers. On top of this we have attended many seminars, webinars and conference calls with HMRC and other parties, in an attempt to build up an appropriate level of knowledge to be able to speak with confidence on the matter.

This year, once we had gained our Bonded Warehouse approval from HMRC, which was a priority for the business so we could take in new polymer volumes from the US, we focused on being to able to provide Customs Clearance directly to customers rather than relying on 3rd party agencies.

We're happy to announce that, upon recruitment of a well established and highly experienced Customs Compliance Officer, we are now doing this. Due to unexpected and significant demand from our customers and referrals made by them to associates, we are now also able to support Import and Export declarations from all of the key UK ports.

The attention we gave this subject over the last couple of years has been a great relief to our customers who knew we had their interests at heart throughout this period of significant uncertainty.

We head into the New Year with confidence and, more importantly,  so do our customers.
