Manage your Energy Costs - Free Seminars
UK plastics manufacturers have been subjected to alarming rises in energy prices over the past 18 months - often significantly higher than industrial competitors on the Continent. All evidence points to further major increases in the coming months. The BPF is running a series of FREE Saving Energy seminars at Interplas, in the seminar theatre - Hall 5, to help companies manage energy costs and improve operating efficiency in turbulent times. These seminars are supported by the Business Support Network with a presentation from John Hall Assosciates.

Heart attack caused by hard work?
The September edition of Travers Smith's Online Update is now available:

Heart attack caused by hard work?
If an employee suffers psychiatric injury arising from stress at work, the employer will not be liable unless it predicted, or should have predicted, the risk. A recent case confirms that this applies equally to cases of physical injury from stress. The employee worked a 70 hour week, managing a pub in a rough area. After almost 18 months of being subjected to threats and damage to his property by customers, he suffered a heart attack. The medical reports confirmed that the heart attack had been triggered by severe stress at work. Nevertheless, the Court decided that the employer was not liable for the injury, because it could not have been expected to know about the impending danger to the employee's health. The employee never told his employer that the job was making him ill, and there was no other reason for the employer to believe that his health was at risk.
