EFSA Launches ‘MixTox’ Initiative

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is launching a project to develop methods to assess risks from exposures to multiple chemicals at the same time. They have opened a consultation to gather initial insights and perspectives on EFSE's proposed approach, with a deadline of 30th November 2016.

Conventional risk assessments usually focus on a single chemical and EFSA feels that this does not accurately reflect real life. Multiple exposure to chemicals in the environment could have 'cocktail' effects, hence the launch of the study. EFSA invites scientists, scientific advisory bodies and civil societies to participate in the consultation, opened on 25th October 2016, as well as to notify EFSA of similar initiatives that could involve collaboration.
