Can you help? Youth Debating Competition is Looking for Student Participants

The newly established European Youth Debating Competition (EYDC) is open for 2017 entries and is looking for students to participate. If you are aware of a school in your area who would be interested, you could help them participate in this transnational competition.

Date & Information

All over Europe in seven different countries, students aged 16 - 19 will debate the merits and challenges of living in a digitalized world. The three best speakers from each participating country will qualify for the European Final in Berlin, on 30th September – 3rd October 2017.

The National Finals in Great Britain will be held either during June or July 2017 in London. Similar to last year’s event, we would like to set the date of the National Finals in collaboration with schools and their pupils, to choose a date that is most suitable for them. We're interested in also hearing which date(s) work best for you/the schools!

Students from any discipline (not strictly STEM) can apply

Debate Topic

All students will receive a short training on the morning of the event, followed by lunch. The actual debate will be in the afternoon.

TOPIC OF THE DEBATE

People, Planet, Profit in the Digitial Age –
with or without petrochemistry and plastics?

  • Society, our environment and the economy – all three are deeply affected by the digital revolution.
  • E-mobility, solar cells, modern communication and the workplace of the future: how can we improve our quality of life and reduce our environmental footprint at the same time?
  • Petrochemistry and plastics: are they part of the problem or key to overcoming these challenges?

This competition is a great opportunity for debating teams or individual students to practice their public speaking skills and to network with students from other schools. Moreover, the pupils will also get the chance to meet with executives, experts and distinguished representatives from the industry, media and sciences.

This event is a joint project between the European Petrochemical Association (EPCA) and PlasticsEurope, supported by the British Plastics Federation.
