Time is running out for ESOS
10,000 of the UK’s biggest businesses have until 5 December 2015 to comply with the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS). ESOS is a mandatory scheme requiring businesses to conduct energy audits across their operations to identify energy reduction opportunities. All information must be compiled into an ESOS report to be submitted to the Environment Agency in time for the December deadline, leaving businesses just four months to get to grips with the scheme.
The scheme only affects large enterprises incorporated in the UK. This includes companies with more than 250 employees or an annual turnover exceeding £42.5m and a balance sheet exceeding £36.5m. It does not affect the public sector, just private and third-sector organisations. Your whole company group must comply with ESOS, including any SMEs the group owns. Franchisees are not affected by the scheme.
Non-compliance penalties begin at a fixed £5,000 charge and rise to £40,000 a day for failure to notify compliance, meaning the next four months are critical to complete audits and submit the report in good time. The Carbon Trust estimates that the energy reduction opportunities most businesses will uncover in the audits could deliver savings in excess of 13.5 times the cost of compliance, so ESOS could help to reduce energy costs and make a big impact on the bottom line.
Inenco already support over 100 BPF members to identify and implement energy reduction plans as part of the BPF Climate Change Agreement, and their ESOS team is able to support any member yet to get to grips with compliance. Inenco is already working with hundreds of businesses to support their ESOS compliance, from Lead Assessors to conduct audits to analysts and ESOS experts.
