EUROPHA makes a start

The BPF is involved in a new FP7 'Research for Associations' project called EUROPHA, which recently held its Kick Off meeting in Spain. The 3 year project commenced in October 2013 and will run for 36 months.

To give the project its full name 'EuroPHA: Novel technology to boost Euorpean Bioeconomy: reducing the production costs of PHA bio-polymer and expanding its applications as 100% compostable food packaging bioplastic'

Whilst bio-plastics themselves are perhaps nothing new in themselves, there is still a lot of company and public interest in this area. The 'EuroPHA project looks to establish a competitive PHA production capacity within Europe, primarily through using perceived 'low value' feedstocks such as agro-food waste. The 'low value' inputs will be a starting point in 3-phase biological synthesis of PHA by mixed microbial culture.

The novel formulation will be trialled for the packaging industry. Of course, being a 'Research for Associations' project, the projects results will be split between the Associations for the benefits of our members.

The project partners include the British Plastics Federation, FECOAM, SPIF, Plastipolis, IDRO, TECNO, IBET, EMPA and Inspiralia.

The Project is funded under Grant Agreement Number FP7-SME-2013; 604770
