Global decaBDE ban is adopted under the UN Stockholm Convention
Friday, 5 May 2017
A consensus meeting this week on persistent organic pollutants (POPs) under the UN Stockholm Convention has approved a ban on the flame retardant decaBDE - this ban extends to recycled materials also.
The ban inlcudes exemptions for aircraft parts (proposed by the EU), as well as derogations to certain parts of legacy and non-legacy vehicles until end of life status (or until 2036). Following the recommendation of UN experts in September 2016, countries voted during the recent meeting to approve the global ban.
