Deadline extended for prestigious Horners’ Awards

In an attempt to match the record number of entries received in 2015, the deadline has been extended for both the Horners’ Award for Plastics Design and Innovation, and the Horners’ Bottlemakers Award.

The Horners’ Award for Plastics Design and Innovation has been running since 1947 and is believed to be the oldest design award for plastics in the world. Manufacturing companies and designers are invited to enter, assuming they have a unique product, process or machine that has commercial potential – or perhaps has already achieved success in the market place.

In 2015, the Horners’ Award for Plastics Design and Innovation was won by Guardian Maritime, which developed an anti-piracy barrier that can be retrofitted to ships, providing a visual and physical deterrent that greatly reduces the threat of piracy.

The Horners’ Bottlemakers Award is for innovative plastic bottles, containers or jars. They must contain a closure but can be made by any process. Entries should also have significant commercial potential or already be successful products.

Last year, the Horners’ Bottlemakers Award went to Logoplaste, which developed a bottle for Ribena offering optimal performance while also saving about 2,500 tons of plastic per year.

Entries for both awards must be either designed or manufactured in the UK, or made of materials produced in the UK.

Both competitions are run by The Worshipful Company of Horners in conjunction with the British Plastics Federation (BPF).

Entries must be received by 18 August.
