How two members actively participate in the Materials - KTN
Thursday, 18 February 2010
The Materials KTN is a network of over 9000 members, two of them have come together because of their synergy and an opportunity to grow new business opportunities.
Both joined the network and were visited by Malcolm Harold of the Materials KTN (Polymers). A subsequent article in Focus magazine written by Malcolm highlighted the novel functionality of their micrometer sized spherical polymer particles and sub-micrometer sized hollow silica spheres. The company is Exilica Limited, a spin out from Coventry University. Rondol Technology Ltd. read the article and contacted Malcolm to link the two companies in communication.
Discussions between Daniel Lynch, Technical Director of Exilica and Brian Murray, founder of Rondol Technology led to ideas being exchanged on specific areas of commercialisation. Rondol have the processing equipment to embed the Exilica materials into thermoplastics required for specific markets.
With the supply chain established the two companies have moved beyond the proof of concept stage and are actively engaged in tailoring specific formulations to meet client requirements.
The picture (Figure 1) shows the distribution of Exilica’s spherical polymer particles dispersed in polypropylene, as compounded by Rondol’s twin-screw compounder (figure 2). The Rondol (new) factory is shown in (figure3).
