Incorporating Recycled Content in Plastics Packaging: BPF Event Exploring the Challenges Faced

Incorporating Recycled Content in Plastics Packaging: BPF Event Exploring the Challenges Faced

The British Plastics Federation (BPF), in partnership with Plastics Europe, is hosting an online half-day seminar on 24 March called ‘The Challenges of Incorporating Recycled Content in Plastics Packaging’.

This event will feature presentations from government, industry and a retailer, looking at supply, measurement, certification, technical barriers and industry case studies.

The online event will begin with a question-and-answer session featuring the Food Standards Agency’s Senior Policy Advisor Tim Chandler. Tim will answer both pre-submitted questions and live questions, providing an insight into the latest government thinking.

He will be followed by WRAP’s Strategic Technical Manager Helen Bird, who will provide an overview of recycled content targets and the challenges faced. Following this, EUPC’s Senior Legal & Regulatory Affairs Manager Silvia Freni Sterrantino, will provide a European perspective, explaining developments in plastics packaging tax legislation from across Europe.

The seminar will then focus on the technical challenges of incorporating recycled content. This section will include a presentation from St. Johns Packaging’s Quality and Technical Manager Adam Bolsover, who will examine the top five technical barriers to incorporating recycled content.

Following a short break, ISCC’s Senior Manager Inna Knelsen and Plastic Recyclers Europe’s Project Manager Mireia Boada will both discuss certification before taking part in a panel debate on the topic.

Tesco’s Sustainable Packaging Manager William Guest will then outline the retailer’s policies regarding incorporating recycled content. The event will conclude with a presentation on measurement of recycled content from the Sustainable Certifications Group Executive Director Tim Baldwin.

The BPF Director General Philip Law comments:

Incorporating recycled content will be one of the most important topics for a large part of our industry in 2022 and it is crucial that companies understand the challenges they may face. This event has been designed to provide a thorough overview of the current situation and to give companies a competitive advantage

Adrian Whyle, Resource Efficiency Senior Manager, Plastics Europe comments:

Plastics Europe members support a 30% EU mandatory target for recycled content in plastics packaging by 2030 to accelerate plastics’ circularity. An enabling and harmonised policy framework and strong collaboration with the value chain and Institutions are essential to make it happen. We are delighted to be co-sponsoring this timely webinar that brings together a wide range of speakers to discuss current bottlenecks and solutions to achieving the legislative and voluntary commitments that have been made for the inclusion of recycled content

The Challenges of Incorporating Recycled Content in Plastics Packaging‘ will run from 13.00 to 16.55 on 24 March.

Delegates registering before 11 March also get access to two online packaging courses on PolymerCourses.com

The event costs £75 + VAT for BPF and Plastics Europe members and £149 + VAT for non-members.
