Introduction to Plastics Technology

Plastic behaves differently to traditional materials such as metal or wood. This introductory hands-on experience one day course is designed to develop an initial understanding of how plastic’s behaviour has been adopted for use in a modern environment and provide a comprehensive introduction to plastics technology. This course does not require any prior knowledge and is suitable for those new to the subject who would benefit from an introduction to polymer materials and their shaping techniques, including designers and architects. The course is supported by the British Plastics Federation.
Course aims and benefits
This course is designed to provide:
• Introduction to plastic materials
• Insight into their structure/properties relationship
• Introduction to shaping techniques of plastics
• Opportunity to obtain hands-on experience in testing plastics
The course is based around a series of lectures and practical sessions with opportunities for discussion, covering the following:
• Introduction to Polymer Science, Materials & Properties
• Introduction to Polymer Processing
• Practical sessions:
- Material Identification
- Processability/Flow Properties
- Mechanical Properties
On successful completion of this course participants will be able to:
• Recognise the main types of plastic materials
• Appreciate the influence of structure on properties
• Match plastic manufacturing techniques to product types
• Gain practical experience of working with plastics
This course is supported by the British Plastics Federation (BPF)
Who should attend?
This one day hands-on experience course is intended for non-technical staff employed in industrial support areas such as sales and marketing, buying, costing and warehouse & distribution departments. This course does not require any prior knowledge and is suitable for those new to the subject who would benefit from an introduction to polymer materials and their shaping techniques (including designers and architects).
