The Return of the King: 10th Impression, 1963. For sale is the First Deluxe Edition of The Lord of the Rings by J. 1,000 boxed sets were produced in 1964 and included only the 1963 printings stated above. The set was not reprinted. The books are bound in the set's original black buckram cloth with gilt titles, author and publisher to the spines. Each volume features bevel-edged boards, gilded page edges and an original silk bookmark sewn in (Fellowships bookmark is loose and the marker for Two Towers is missing). The original slipcase (not present) featured the Pauline Baynes color Triptych artwork which was specially commissioned for this deluxe edition. Taking its place is a custom made reproduction of the slipcase with recessed panels of laminated facsimile illustrations from Baynes Triptych surrounded by black cloth. The interior is fully lined.

Made to fit the included books. Beautifully crafted by David Miller of'The Tolkien Bookshelf'. With only 1,000 sets produced, this is the scarcest of all the original Allen & Unwin First Editions, as well as the Houghton Mifflin issues.
