Jayplas secures Advanced Novel Technology status for food-grade recycled HDPE

Jayplas has secured Advanced Novel Technology (ANT) status for its postconsumer recycled HDPE (PCR rHDPE) granulate, clearing a key regulatory hurdle for its use in food contact packaging.

The approval follows the formal review window between 20 March and 20 April 2026, during which no objections were raised. The development enables Jayplas to move into commercial supply discussions with packaging converters and brand owners seeking compliant recycled content solutions.

The company will be submitting its CMSS (Compliance Monitoring Summary Sheet) to the FSA with a expected decision in Mid-May 2026.

The milestone, alongside recognition from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), provides further evidence that mechanical recycling can deliver food grade HDPE at industrial scale—an area of increasing focus as the sector works to meet recycled content targets and evolving regulatory requirements.

A spokesperson for Jayplas said: “Securing ANT status is a significant step in demonstrating that mechanically recycled HDPE can meet the stringent requirements for food contact applications. This creates a viable pathway for greater adoption of recycled content in rigid packaging formats.”

Jayplas’ HDPE recycling facility in Lincolnshire was developed over a two-year period and opened in August 2024. The plant incorporates advanced washing and extrusion systems sourced from European suppliers and was designed specifically to produce food-grade rHDPE. Commissioning began in 2025.

With ANT status in place, Jayplas is now positioned to supply PCR rHDPE in line with UK and EU requirements, including EU Regulation 2022/1616, at a time when demand for compliant, high-quality recyclate continues to grow.
