Operation Clean Sweep® is an industry led programme which is run in over 20 countries. The BPF run the scheme in the UK and were the first association to adopt the programme from the Plastics Industry Association in America who designed it.
Operation Clean Sweep® sets out some simple practical steps which companies can undertake to ensure they are doing everything they can to contain plastic pellets, flakes and powders. This involves doing an audit of the site to look for potential spills areas and then addressing these issues through worksite changes, staff training or setting up new procedures.
Plastics in the ocean including plastic pellet remains a key issue for the government and NGOs. Media attention in this area has also increased significantly this year. In February 2017, following 'The Great Winter Nurdle Hunt', which was organised by the NGO Fidra, there were several articles in the newspaper specifically on industrial plastic pellets.

The BPF continue to encourage all members who handle plastic pellets, flakes or powders to sign up to Operation Clean Sweep®. This helps to prove the plastic industry’s commitment to keeping plastic out of the marine environment as well as helping with your site's health and safety and general housekeeping.
