Each book is bound in red cloth with gilt lettering on the spines. The dust-jackets were designed and illustrated by the author. Full size maps, drawn by Christopher Tolkien, are included and attached to the last page of each book. These early printings feature the original unrevised first edition text. The 9th impression of The Fellowship of the Ring is stated, in error, as the 8th impression, 1960.

The copy included here is the correct 8th impression, 1959. The slipcase used for this particular set is the third state out of a total of six used for the British first edition. This case is distinguished from the earlier two states in that it does not have a printed price on the front label, and from the fourth state in that it is clearly not covered with linson, and from the fifth and sixth states in that there are no staples used in its construction. Only 400 copies of this set were printed, less than any of the other five states (the first and second state had 500 copies each).
