JSC Rotational Ltd Press Release: Award Winning Engineering Students use Rotomoulding to Achieve Success

ImagePershore High School Sixth Form students Louise Chilman, Ryan Cooper, Jonathan Drinkwater, and Jonathan Jones achieved great success at The Engineering Education Scheme West Midlands Regional Big Bang Event, taking the coveted Gold Crest Award.

The students faced numerous challenges over the duration of the scheme, but through a great deal of determination discovered the solutions required.

The scheme has provided talented Sixth Form Technology, Maths and Science students' with hands-on experience of engineering with sponsorship from General Dynamics UK and base units rotomoulded by Worcestershire-based company, JSC Rotational Limited.

This year the team worked with the Design and Technology department as well as professional engineers from General Dynamics UK.  Back in September 2012 the students were presented with an engineering challenge set by General Dynamics UK - a world-leading security and defence company, specialising in technical leadership, manufacturing expertise and prime contract management skills to deliver C4I communications solutions, armoured fighting vehicle (AFV) technology, security systems for critical national infrastructure and deployable infrastructure.  They wanted students to solve and design an alternative energy source and a generator for military use in the field.

Team member Jonathan Jones said about the scheme: "The Engineering Education Scheme has been a very fulfilling experience.  From entering into it as a relative novice, I have come a long way in furthering my knowledge of mechanical engineering.  I have enjoyed applying mathematical concepts, learnt at school,
to solve real engineering problems for our project.  EES has also improved my skills in time management, team work and organisation preparing me for any professional career.

In taking part in the scheme, I and the team have had the opportunity to work with professional engineers from General Dynamics UK who have mentored us throughout this project as well as having the opportunity to work in Birmingham University’s world class mechanical and biochemical engineering facilities and test product at JSC Rotational Ltd.   EES is a step towards a career in engineering which I would encourage anyone interested to get involved.”

The students are now preparing to take their project to the national Final to display their work and compete against other award winning entries from across the country.

Clive Corbett, Head teacher said “I am hugely proud of the team’s astonishing achievement and so grateful for the support from the companies involved.
