What attracted you to the plastics industry in the first place?

I came to the plastics industry by default. I had a successful career in another industry but my Husband and I decided to set up our own manufacturing business. His expertise and qualifications were in the polymer sector, mine was in     business development. I applied skills and knowledge from outside of the industry and learnt about plastics as our business developed.

 

How did your career move forward?

I have a degree in Agricultural Economics and initially worked in the food and contract packing industry moving into roles that covered technical and business development. These business skills were proved essential for running our own plastics company. I have been supported by some wonderful people within the Rotational Moulding Sector who have taken the time to answer my many questions on how and why things work.

What advice do you have for young people starting out?

If you have a polymer based qualification, that will be a great start. However the polymer industry is very diverse and sometime other qualifications such as business management, marketing, accountancy, HR etc are an excellent foundation. The 'polymer' understanding can be gained at a later date. The important thing is to be passionate and inquisitive about all areas of the business and not to be afraid of changing roles and accepting new challenges.

What do you like about working in the plastics industry?

The best thing about working for a plastics manufacturer is when you see the products that you have designed and made being used out in the real world. I have to admit that I have been known to take pictures of ice cream bins, hand wash systems and baby changers whilst on holiday, much to the dismay of my family.

Also the plastics industry continues to evolve so that there are always new things to learn and implement.
