LINPAC Press Release: LINPAC’s domed pizza disc enhances presentation on shelf

ImageTo tackle the problem of toppings tumbling to the bottom of the pack when pizzas are displayed on the shelf vertically, Europe’s leading multi-material packaging manufacturer, LINPAC Packaging, has developed a new range of domed pizza bases.

The shallow, innovative dome design helps to keep toppings evenly spread across the pizza so that consumers can see the ingredients clearly and presentation and appeal is retained.

“Retailers prefer to display their pizzas vertically on the shelf for several reasons. First, it allows the product to be clearly seen by the consumer, enticing them to make a purchase, and secondly, it allows them to maximise the shelf space available,” said Megan Ashcroft, Marketing Manager at LINPAC Packaging.

“However, a common problem associated with traditional flat pizza bases is that once they are stood vertically, gravity means that toppings begin to slide down the face of the pizza, gathering at the bottom of the pack. The impact of food presentation is lost and retailers can miss out on potential sales. The novel dome shape of our new pizza bases solves this problem whilst still allowing retailers to make optimum use of shelf space.”

Across Europe, the chilled pizza market has a volume of 742.3m kgs and is currently worth €3,376m. That is expected to rise to 783.8m kgs and €3,645m by 2015, growing 14% in volume and 20% in value in the five years between 2010 and 2015.

The UK market volume is forecast to grow by 11% in the same five years, from 85.2m kgs in 2010 to 94.6m kgs in 2015; and in monetary terms, from €456.1m to €528.5m, growing by 16%.

The pizza bases, which are manufactured from EPS and available with optional ventilation holes to prevent pizza dough from becoming soggy, are part of LINPAC Packaging’s new Freshware range for the chilled retail prepared and convenience foods market.

LINPAC Packaging announced its entry in to the sector back in January – the first time the food packaging company has entered a new market, complementing its existing operations within the meat, fish and poultry, bakery, foodservice and fresh produce sectors.

The  Freshware range will comprise of packaging for prepared fruit and salads, dips, sandwich fillers, fresh pasta, pizza, prepared vegetables (e.g. stir-fry), chilled bakery, cooked meats and prepared fish.

To support the development of its Freshware range and move into chilled prepared and convenience, LINPAC Packaging has launched its Freshform division. New highly flexible thermoforming capacity has been installed at its Featherstone site in the UK to enable the fast turnaround supply of new designs for the sector.

The domed pizza bases are the second packaging solution to be developed for pizzas under the Freshware label. LINPAC worked in partnership with a leading supermarket retailer to design and develop an exclusive pizza disc with a squared base to enable shingling of the pizza on the shelf.
