Lord Mandelson Prefers Plastics
Tuesday, 20 April 2010
Lord Mandelson the Secretary of State for Business has written to Peter Davis, Director-General of the British Plastics Federation in response to his letter expressing concern about Lord Mandelson's comparison between Gordon Brown as "granite" and David Cameron as "plastic" in the "Times" 3rd April. (CLICK HERE to see attached letter).
Lord Mandelson writes that " the Government is proud and supportive of the UK's Plastics Industry. Plastics have an impressive heritage in the UK and have formed a fundamental part of our modern life........I hope it continues to innovate and flourish ".
He continues tongue in cheek to write that "some plastics - those which are malleable, light- weight, and non stick - are not the sorts of qualities one would wish for in a national leader".
He concludes that " Perhaps along with granite, it would be equally appropriate to refer to the Prime Minister as a polycarbonate - clear, durable, tough and indestructible!" ( CLICK HERE to see attached letter)
Peter Davis said "Lord Mandelson's recognition of the importance of the UK Plastics Industry and its innovative materials is very welcome especially during a busy Election campaign. It would be wrong of me to comment on which of our leaders is represented by what material - Polling day will reveal who is durable and who goes to recycling".
