(Miguel Cambeiro, Senior Editor, Olefins & Polymers at S&P Global Platts)
With 2021 beginning with logistical system disruption and upstream energy volatility, supply chain management has become key. Resin producers are focused on margin protection as demand remains uncertain and with parts of the economy still shut this is likely to trickle down the supply chain. Demand for food and personal care packaging, as well as for resins going into pharmaceuticals applications, will continue to be the focus for the first half of the year. Growth in new technologies, such as electric vehicles, will provide a challenge to injection moulders going forward, leading to a big drive in ESG, recyclables and renewables.

The BPF have been in talks with the prison service (who have been a long standing member of the BPF) to discuss employment opportunities for former inmates that have gained injection moulding experience while in custody. There is an opportunity to close skills gaps in the sector while benefitting the community – immediate paid employment for ex-offenders reduces the reoffending rate by 80%.
