Plastics Recycling Markings
There is currently no mandatory need to mark plastics but this is being consulted on as part of the Extended Producer Responsibility Consultation.
However, as an aid to recycling, the BPF recommend that larger parts and packaging should be marked with the appropriate identification code. This identifies the type of plastic it is made from rather than whether it is recyclable or not.
Marking For Plastics Packaging Materials
To identify plastics packaging materials, the BPF and PlasticsEurope have recommended the use of a coding system devised by the Plastics Industry Association which identifies the plastic in accordance with ISO 11469:2016.

How do I know if a product is recyclable?
Some packaging items do provide advise on the label on whether their product is recyclable. An example of a scheme used is the On-Pack Recycling Label (OPRL) which says if an item can be recycled or not. Retailers and brand owners are encouraged to provide their customers with as much information as possible.
