BRITISH PAVILION AT PLASTIMAGEN 2017
The British Plastics Federation together with DIT Mexico organised a welcome dinner after the first day of the exhibition, on the 7 November where the UK exhibitors had a chance to get to know each other and learn more about the Department for International Trade (DIT) Mexico and how they can help the British companies in achieving their export objectives.
The majority of the British exhibitors applied for the DIT grant of £2,500 'Tradeshow Access Programme' (TAP) administered by the BPF. These grants enabled the SMEs to explore the market, as the fund covered the majority of the stand cost.
The predicted estimated business wins from the UK exhibitors who received the TAP grant at Plastimagen 2017 came to an average of over £100K per company. Which, with the DIT grants of £2,500 per eligible exhibitor, translates to £40 return for every £1 invested by DIT in helping the UK business export.

Why Mexico?
The Mexican plastics industry has seen a real growth in recent years with plastic replacing traditional materials in automotive, medical devices, construction, packaging, agriculture, and electro-mechanical products. This increasing use of plastic is helping companies achieve greater competitiveness. The plastics industry in Mexico generates annual sales of over 21 billion dollars. With the plastics industry growing year on year Plastimagen which is the largest most important plastics exhibition in Mexico provides a gateway into the Mexican market. Mexico is the third largest automobile manufacturing nation in the Western Hemisphere and the automotive sector accounts for 17.6% of Mexico's manufacturing sector.
- Mexico is the fourth largest importer of plastics machinery from UK after USA, India and China form the countries outside Europe
- Plastic machinery exports from the UK to Mexico doubled between 2014 to 2015
- Almost 50% of plastic resins currently used by Mexico’s manufacturing sector is imported. Mexico’s existing production capabilities are unable to satisfy current national demand. Therefore, consuming sectors continue to rely on imports to meet their needs.
- Mexico’s plastic manufacturers’ require increased productivity, so more high tech machinery will be required.
