World's First All-Plastic Trumpet Wins Horners Award
Monday, 10 October 2016
The pTrumpet — the world’s first all-plastic trumpet — has won the Horners Award for Plastics Innovation and Design 2016.
Designed by musicians in England and produced by Warwick Music Group, the pTrumpet was praised by the judges for the fact that it made the trumpet an affordable instrument for many — especially school children.
The pTrumpet is made up of a fully plastic valve system — the first of its kind — with self-lubricating plastic properties. The polymer lead pipe technology is unique, as is the ability to manufacture the lead pipe in one unit.
The judges selected the Thermochromic Cable Collar by GH Innovation Ltd as the runner-up. It is a brand new electrical fire safety product that highlights high temperature or loose electrical connections by changing colour. It was commended for its potentially lifesaving properties, as one of the main causes of electrical fires in homes and businesses are overheated electrical connections.
The Horners’ Award for Plastics Design and Innovation has been running since 1947 and is believed to be the oldest design award for plastics in the world. The award is jointly run by the Worshipful Company of Horners and the British Plastics Federation (BPF). It is awarded annually to products demonstrating innovation in plastics design and manufacture or in the processing of plastics.
The winner received their award at the Horners banquet on 6 October, which was presented by the Lord Mayor of London Jeffrey Mountevans. The runner-up will receive theirs at the BPF Annual Dinner on 13 October.
The Horners and BPF Polymer Apprentice of the Year Award is also now open for entry. More information about the award can be found here.
