PVC Pellets Becomes 60th Member of British Plastic Federation’s Recycling Group
Wednesday, 22 March 2023
The British Plastic Federation Recycling Group (BPFRG) celebrates PVC Pellets becoming the 60th member to join the group. The BPFRG consists of organisations involved in the collection, sorting and reprocessing of plastic waste, together with companies that convert waste plastics back into new polymer materials or products. The recycling group continues to provide a united voice to tackle the challenges facing the industry. PVC Pellets have a vision of creating a circular economy for PVC, which is aligned with the BPFRG’s own vision for a circular economy across all plastics.
Founded in 2021 by Ben Morley, PVC Pellets is a privately owned company based in South Derbyshire. PVC Pellets recycle materials from cooling towers and water treatment plants into PVC flake. The process is split across two companies. The sister company, BM Tech, provides the process for transportation, pre cleaning and main plant processing to end of waste status. PVC Pellets does the post grading, bagging and dispatch. PVC Pellets provides a regular supply of a highly consistent feedstock of PVC flake, with a maximum size of 4mm, with zero heavy metals. Furthermore, the CO2 savings from this recycling process are significant. PVC Pellets recently celebrated a milestone thanks to a load of recycled PVC sold in March 2023 which means the company has ultimately saved four million kilogrammes of CO2e compared to producing virgin material. PVC Pellets are also committed to industry best practice since BM Tech is a member of Recovinyl Plus. Recovinyl Plus monitors and verifies the recycling of PVC and the uptake of PVC recyclate.
The company also understands that the success of our industry relies upon inspiring future generations to take up a career in plastics. BM Tech invited engineering and business students from the University of South Derbyshire to give them hands-on experience on how plastic is recycled. The BPF Education and Skills Committee encourages members to build strong links within their local community and run initiatives such as this. The current BPF Career Ambassador scheme supports company employees to run career activities in secondary schools and colleges. The ambassadors explain why pursuing a career in plastics is so rewarding and the huge array of career pathways which draw upon many skillsets.
The next step for PVC Pellets is to set up an extruder so it can produce its own pellets made from recycled PVC. These pellets can then be used in injection moulding and extrusion to make recycled products such as rainwater gutters, fascias, window frames, ducting and pipes.
When asked for his reaction on joining BPF, James Morley (Business Development Manager) commented “As well as needing to raise our profile, we want to engage in discussions to help promote recycling and the use of recycled PVC. Waste containing PVC is actually a great resource and we all need to work together to take advantage of it!”.
