RPC’s Retortable Barrier Jar Scoops Horners Bottlemakers Award

RPC Containers Corby’s Retortable Barrier Jar has been confirmed as the winner of the Horners Bottlemaker Award 2011.

The jar is part of RPC’s enhanced range of retortable barrier plastic jars for catering applications which combine a mix of food-safe, long-life and lightweight food storage. Design strengths, owing to the properties of barrier plastics, are the product’s cost effectiveness and high standard of product protection allied to enhanced convenience and safety. A typical shelf life is 18 months unopened and once open it is easily resealed and stored in the fridge without the need to transfer content into a separate container.

The Retortable Barrier Jar is on display at the Interplas Exhibition at the Birmingham NEC from Tuesday 27th -29th September on the BPF Stand (D44A) which is in the centre of the British Centre of Excellence, where it was formally announced as the winner of the Horners’ Bottlemakers Award. RPC Corby will subsequently be presented with their Award on 6th October at The Mansion House during the annual banquet of the Worshipful Company of Horners.

Peter Davis, Chairman of the Horners Award Committee said, “We felt that the Retortable Barrier Jar demonstrated exemplary innovation and comprehensive product design. The panel was unanimous in concluding that the benefits of the product, especially within the catering industry, will help to promote the contribution that good design can make. It is a solid example of the significant role of plastics in wider society.”

RPC use a unique construction of thermic ribs which facilitate expansion and contraction during the heating and cooling stages. The product’s wide-mouth neck and robust shape means that it can easily be hot-filled and processed using existing machinery, while the lightweight construction reduces the amount of packaging used.

An RPC spokesman said, “We are thrilled to have been chosen as the winner of the 2011 Horner’s Bottlemakers Award. At RPC Corby we strive constantly to create genuinely innovative products and it is exceptionally gratifying for our work to be recognised in this prestigious way."

The Horners Bottlemakers Award established 2002 is run jointly by the Worshipful Company of Horners (an ancient Livery Company of the City of London) and the British Plastics Federation (BPF). The Award is sponsored by Unilon Milacron, Proma, BCM, British Plastics and Rubber and Automa.
