Save the Olympics Stadium Plastics Wrap - Plastics Industry offers ideas
Thursday, 10 February 2011
The British Plastics Federation (BPF) is backing the London Olympics organisers’ call for tenders from companies willing to supply and fund the plastics wrap around the main stadium after Government funding for the wrap was cut in the Comprehensive Spending Review.
BPF Director-General Peter Davis is calling on BPF member companies to come forward and submit their ideas together or individually to the Olympic authorities. He put across his views on showcasing British manufacturing excellence in the Olympics in a submission to the Department of Business in January this year in which he stressed that “the main stadium will look awful without the plastic wrap” and reiterated that the plastics industry is “keen to assist in providing a solution” to the problem.
“The deadline of the 18th February is ludicrously short. The supplier of the wrap could supply on a lease basis to the Olympics, thus retaining ownership of the material and the ability to generate revenue from it and if the plastic material is PVC it can be collected after the Games and taken away to be recycled not far from London,” said Davis.
The PVC banners used by the City of Liverpool when it was the Capital of Culture in 2008 were taken back and made into popular souvenir bags.
"Alternatively the plastic wrap can be turned into sports bags by the owner of the material, carrying the Olympics logo and perhaps the signatures of famous athletes, and be sold worldwide as a collectable and sustainable souvenir.”
“Time is short and I do encourage our innovative member companies to make proposals,” added Davis.
