Innovia were pleased to host a return visit from Sue Hayman MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, accompanied by Sandy Martin MP, Shadow Minister for Waste & Recycling yesterday.
Stephen Langstaff delivered their sustainability presentation which highlights what we are doing to develop products that can reduce food waste while facilitating easier recycling. Innovia took the opportunity to emphasise the need to standardise waste collection across the country and the need to collect and recycle flexible packaging.
Wayne Middleton highlighted that BOPP has a very low density and is stiff, allowing very thin lightweight films to be produced which provides the maximum resource efficiency. Polypropylene can be readily recycled. It is more resistant to degradation during mechanical recycling compared with other polymers e.g. PE, which gives much greater potential for future higher value products. When collected, BOPP film can be sorted and mixed with the existing PP recycle stream.
Both Sue Hayman MP and Sandy Martin MP were given a tour of our manufacturing plant and new assets, they enjoyed their visit and the ability to see and learn first-hand about what Innovia Films are doing to improve the recyclability of packaging. They stated that there was still a lot of learning to be gathered, but they agreed that there needs to be a better understanding of the value of flexible packaging before companies switched to alternative pack formats that were worse for the environment with higher carbon emissions.
