The winner of the Worshipful Company of Horners and BPF 2019 Polymer Apprentice of the Year Award has been announced as Jordan Clayton of Polypipe Ltd (Mason Pinder), who undertook a Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship BTEC Level 3. The award’s runner up was Charles Thomas of St. Davids Assemblies and the highly commended went to Christine Revill of Polypipe and Isaac Topley of Rutland Plastics.
The calibre of entrants this year has been exceptional. The winner, Jordan Clayton, demonstrated a high level of achievement in his workplace as well as outstanding achievements in his apprenticeship. His involvement in an improvement project lead to a company saving of approximately £260,000. Furthermore, his work-life balance has improved over the years and he is currently training physically on a regular basis. Jordan will soon be invited to attend the Livery Companies Skills Council Award Ceremony in March 2020 to receive his Polymer Apprentice Certificate, ceremonial drinking horn and £500 cash prize.
His manager Simon Golightly added “The cost saving for me is not the focus, yes, it is a fantastic achievement however what it has done for Jordan’s development and communication skills is actually invaluable. This was an area identified during performance reviews that I asked Jordan to work on and I can proudly say that it has been well and truly succeeded”.
Charles Thomas, who also received a Polymer Apprentice Certificate and a £200 cash prize, completed his engineering apprenticeship at St. David’s Assemblies. Charles impressed the judges with his ability to take tasks on and continuously exceed expectations. In addition, his love for BMX riding and challenging himself was impressive and motivational. Highly commended Christine Revill is completing her apprenticeship at Polypipe; the judges were impressed by her confidence and her commitment to the engineering world. She has a clear vision for her future in automation and will not let anything get in her way. Finally, Isaac Topley of Rutland Plastics was highly commended for his perseverance in engineering and his commitment to be the expert in his field.
