George Allen & Unwin Ltd. Octavo, original full bound green cloth with dark blue stamped lettering. First Edition, Eleventh Impression, 1959 (or 6th Printing of the Second Edition), of J. Tolkien's, The Hobbit, or There and Back Again. A tremendously rare early example.

When Tolkien's revolutionary'The Hobbit' arrived on bookshelves in 1937, it redefined fantasy and introduced the genre to a new audience. Some consider it to have been the Harry Potter of the time. With the success of the first printing, the publishers decided to incur the costs of printing color illustrations in the second printing which Tolkien produced himself. The text of the first edition was also changed by the second edition to align with the story of The Lord of the Rings, soon to be published. The popularity was so great that his publisher requested a new series and thus The Lord of the Rings came about. Binding tight with moderate slant. Full-bound green cloth boards present with a few scattered stains and light tape ghosts to front and rear top and bottom edges. Heavy shelf-wear with loss and moderate rubbing to corners.

Spine partially faded with chipping to head and foot with light lsos. Foxing and toning to text blocks with light pencill marks to bottom. Remnants of bookplate to pastedowns and rear endpaper with faint stamps to front endpaper. Partial to full tape to gutters through title page. Mild spotting to intneral pagees, mostly to front.

As one of the more coveted novels, its often included amongst the most celebrated books, such as The Adventures of Augie March by Saul Bellow, All the Kings Men by Robert Penn Warren, American Pastoral by Philip Roth, An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser, Animal Farm by George Orwell, Appointment in Samarra by John O'Hara, Are You There God?
