University of Birmingham

The University of Birmingham has established a Birmingham Plastics Network, an interdisciplinary team of more than 60 academics working together to shape the fate and sustainable future of plastics. Our lead researchers include:

  • Professor Andrew Dove- Sustainable Polymer Chemistry
  • Professor Fern Elsdon-Baker- Director Research Institute for STEMM in Culture and Society (ISTEMMiCS)
  • Professor Stefan Krause- Ecohydrology and Biogeochemistry
  • Professor Aleks Cavoski- Environmental Law

Our plastics research spans many areas of academia, including:

  • Development of sustainable polymers
  • Policy for sustainable plastics and associated terminology
  • Sustainable methods for the recycling and re-use of plastics
  • Environmental impacts of end-of-life solutions
  • Development of new degradable Biomaterials
  • Consumer responsibility; public perceptions and expectations
