Update on EU PFAS Restriction under REACH

The EU's PFAS restriction proposal is advancing, with ECHA's RAC (Risk Assessment Committee) and SEAC (Socio-Economic Analysis Committee) assessing various sectors.

At the RAC-72 meeting on March 4, 2025, alternatives to PFAS were discussed, and RAC provisionally concluded on fluorinated gases, transport, and energy. SEAC-66 (March 12-13, 2025) provided provisional conclusions on fluorinated gases, with further discussions on transport and energy set for June.

The discussion explored alternative restriction options for uses where a total ban on PFAS might be disproportionate, based on socio-economic assessments.

Conditions for continued use, such as risk management measures to minimise PFAS emissions, were also discussed.
