Upskilling Without Downtime: A New Approach to Workforce Development in the Polymer Industry

Upskilling Without Downtime: A New Approach to Workforce Development in the Polymer Industry

Following conversations with manufacturers, processors and technical specialists at Interplas 2026, one theme emerged time and time again: the polymer industry needs more flexible ways to develop skills and attract new talent.

Across the sector, employers are facing a dual challenge. On one hand, they need to upskill their existing workforce to keep pace with evolving technologies, materials, sustainability requirements and quality standards. On the other, many organisations are struggling to recruit the next generation of polymer professionals and address the skills gaps created by an ageing workforce.

For many businesses, workforce development has become a strategic priority.

The challenge is finding solutions that support both recruitment and upskilling without disrupting day-to-day operations.

Building Skills at Every Stage of the Talent Pipeline

While recruitment remains a key focus for many employers, attracting new talent is only part of the solution. Long-term success depends on developing skills across the entire workforce, from new starters and operators through to technicians, engineers, supervisors and managers.

Many of the employers we spoke with highlighted the need for more flexible learning opportunities that can quickly address technical knowledge gaps, support career progression and help employees adapt to changing industry demands.

At the same time, organisations are looking for practical ways to demonstrate investment in their people, creating clear development pathways that improve employee engagement, retention and progression.

Flexible Training for Modern Manufacturing

Traditional training models can be difficult to balance with production demands. Releasing employees for extended periods is not always practical, particularly within busy manufacturing environments.

To help address this challenge, S&A Academy has developed its Modular Polymer CPD Programme – a series of intensive short courses designed specifically for plastics and polymer manufacturers.

Delivered virtually by specialist polymer trainers, the programme enables employers to provide targeted technical development while minimising disruption to operations.

Each module combines live learning with workplace-based assignments, ensuring knowledge is immediately applied to real manufacturing environments.

Supporting Technical Excellence

The programme covers a broad range of specialist topics, including:

• Polymer Materials
• Polymer Scientific Aspects
• Polymer Processing Techniques
• Quality Assurance and Control
• Sustainability within the Polymer Sector
• Health, Safety and Environmental Regulation and Control
• Polymer Applications and Market Segmentation
• Problem Solving and Continuous Improvement in Polymer Manufacturing

Modules can be completed individually or combined into wider development pathways, allowing employers to tailor learning to both individual and organisational needs.

Recruitment, Retention and Skills Development

Workforce development is increasingly about more than filling vacancies.

The most successful organisations are creating environments where employees can continuously develop their knowledge and skills, see clear progression opportunities and build long-term careers within the industry.

Combining recruitment initiatives with structured learning opportunities helps employers strengthen retention, improve capability and create sustainable talent pipelines for the future.

Apprenticeships remain a valuable route for bringing new talent into the sector, while shorter CPD programmes provide an effective way to enhance the skills of existing teams. Together, these approaches create a comprehensive workforce development strategy that supports both immediate business needs and long-term growth.

Investing in the Future of the Industry

One of the clearest messages from Interplas was that people remain one of the polymer industry's greatest assets.

As businesses continue to navigate technological change, sustainability challenges and increasing customer expectations, investment in workforce capability will be critical to maintaining competitiveness.

Developing new talent, retaining experienced employees and providing flexible opportunities for continuous learning are all part of building a resilient workforce for the future.

For polymer manufacturers looking to strengthen their skills base, workforce development is no longer simply a training issue – it is a business priority.
