Zero Waste Awards Scheme Relaunched
Tuesday, 10 November 2020
The recognition and reward scheme for businesses and organisations that are driving their waste up the waste hierarchy, the Zero Waste Awards, has been relaunched.
Set up in 2010, after ten successful years the scheme has been refreshed to reflect the growing aspirations of businesses to move waste up the hierarchy and increase the amount of waste they prevent, reuse and recycle.
Organisation’s environmental credentials are increasingly under scrutiny and sustainability is now a shopping priority for customers, in addition to a strategy for businesses to save costs, improve brand image, comply with regulations and benefit the earth.
The scheme represents a community of over 500 likeminded businesses and some previous winners include: the NHS, ITV Studios, Santander, Canary Wharf, Diageo and Network Rail.
All of these businesses are committed to reducing their environmental impact but we can all do more. The Zero Waste Awards provides a platform for collaboration, knowledge sharing and access to expert advice, provided by our sector specific scheme partners. These hand-picked partners include packaging waste experts, Wastepack and outsourced resource management provider and consultancy, Reconomy. All of the scheme partners are happy to provide advice and guidance to scheme entrants, whether starting off their journey or well on their way towards zero waste.
The scheme is split into ten sector categories ranging from hospitality to healthcare to construction. This enables entrants to be measured against comparable businesses in the same industry.
For a quick, two-minute health check on your organisation’s waste and recycling credentials, complete the ‘Zerowasteometer’. Created by scheme partner Reconomy, the handy tool allows organisations to check where they are on their journey in just a few clicks.

Speaking ahead of the relaunch, Nathan Gray, Head of Sustainability at Reconomy said, ‘We are delighted to be partnering with the Zero Waste Awards to help recognise those businesses that have made great progress toward zero waste as part of their sustainability strategy. Resource management has such an important role in the overall context of reducing carbon emissions and as we build back from the impact of the pandemic, many Reconomy customers are redoubling their efforts and setting out ambitious targets for the years ahead. Our Zerowasteometer tool, available to anyone interested in entering the awards, is a great way to get a simple picture of where you are on your zero waste journey and what to think about to drive it forward. Good luck to everyone who is taking part this year”.
