It is a 2nd Edition Hardcover series with Dustjackets. The slipcase is made of cardboard, and the top back corner of the case is rubbed and worn. Each of the books has its original dust jacket. The Return of the King dust jacket has a chip missing at the top of the spine and a glass ring on the front cover. The books have fold out maps in the back.

The color used in the front cover symbol, the spine symbol, the top page edge stain color, and the front end page of each book are color coordinated. Tolkien wrote the Lord of the Rings between 1937 and 1949.
