Lord of the Rings Tolkien First 1st Edition Set Fellowship Two Tower Return King

  

A first edition set of J. Tolkiens masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings, dating from the early 1960s. The Fellowship of the Ring, 12. Printing 1962; The Two Towers, 7. Printing 1960; The Return of the King, 11.

Published in London by George Allen & Unwin and bound in scarlet cloth with gilt lettering to the spine and Tolkiens fold-out maps of Middle-earth mounted on the rear endpapers. Jacket designs and all illustrations are by the author.

These books were adapted into perhaps the most famous trilogy of movies of the 21. Century to date and are regularly cited as the greatest fictional writings ever in public polls. The continuing interest in Tolkiens works is exemplified by Amazons new series in preparation set in Tolkiens Middle-earth in its Second Age. Will be posted in bubblewrap and cardboard layers to preserve their smart condition.

Dustjackets will be protected in removable cellophane when delivered. This protection is present in the photos of the three books together, but I temporarily removed it to take the individual photos of the spread-out dustjackets. Printing1962, NOT ex-library and very good with a firm binding and looking hardly read with clean boards except for a tiny, inconspicuous mark towards the bottom of the front board and a nice map of the Shire in red and black as well as its original fold-out map of Middle-earth attached to the rear endpaper. The price-clipped dustjacket has a small piece missing at the top of its spine and a couple of small, repaired edge tears and there is a bit of wear at its corners and normal age toning to its unprinted areas, but is good plus overall. Printing 1960, NOT ex-library and very good overall and still retaining its original fold-out map mounted on the rear endpaper.

The boards have just some faint signs of age and use and the binding is firm and it looks little read with a small handwritten name at the top edge of the front endpaper. The price-clipped dustjacket is good plus with chipping at the top and bottom of the spine, a bit of wear at its corners and repaired tears on some folds. The Return of the King, 11.

Printing 1965, NOT ex-library and very good plus with a firm binding and clean pages looking hardly read and with the nice fold-out map of Gondor, Rohan and Mordor present and in very good condition. There are a few spots of foxing on the long edge of the page block not penetrating to the pages, except slightly on the very last leaf. The dustjacket is also very good plus with just a very minor bit of rubbing to a few corners.
