Lord of the Rings Tolkien First 1st Edition Set Fellowship Two Tower Return King

Published in London by George Allen & Unwin and bound in scarlet cloth with gilt lettering to the spine and Tolkiens fold-out red and black maps of Middle-earth mounted on the rear endpapers. Jacket designs and all illustrations are by the author.

These books were adapted into perhaps the most famous trilogy of movies of the 21. Century to date and are regularly cited as the greatest fictional writings ever in public polls. The continuing interest in Tolkiens works is exemplified by Amazons new series in preparation set in Tolkiens Middle-earth in its Second Age.

Will be posted in bubblewrap and cardboard layers to preserve their condition. Dustjackets will be protected in removable clear cellophane when delivered.

Printing1957, ex-library but still good plus with a firm binding, decent boards and a nice original fold-out map. Small stamps and tape marks to the endpapers, but the boards are clean. Inscriptions to the front endpaper and thin linear marks to pages 45 and 49 (see photo). Paper over front hinge slightly cracked (may have been repaired, but hard to see). The dustjacket is intact with wear/chips to some corners and other signs of its age, but it has not been price-clipped.

In the 1950s, the publishers used a couple of different printers to print and bind The Fellowship for the various different printings. This one was printed by Purnell & Sons, who bound the book in boards fractionally shorter (by about 5mm) than the printings bound by Jarrold & Sons (the other two books in this set) but actually the first printing of The Fellowship was also 5mm shorter than the first printings of Two Towers and Return of the King, so this set matches the first printings set in this respect. Printing 1960, NOT ex-library and a very good book in a good plus dustjacket. A firm binding and looking little read with its nice original fold-old map. There is an inscription to the blank page opposite the half-title page (first printed page). The dustjacket has chips to its corners and the top and bottom of the spine and some age-toning but has not been price-clipped. The Return of the King, 8. Printing 1961, NOT ex-library and very good overall with a firm binding and looking hardly read with decent boards.

There is an inscription to the front endpaper and the original fold out map is still present in very good condition. The jacket has a bit of age-toning, especially to the spine, and minor wear at some corners.
