A vintage first edition set of J. Tolkiens masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings, dating from 1965 with very good books and about very good original dustjackets. An original set that was bought together in 1965. The Fellowship of the Ring, 14. Printing 1965; The Two Towers, 11. Printing 1965; The Return of the King, 11. Published in London by George Allen & Unwin and bound in scarlet cloth with gilt lettering to the spine and Tolkiens fold-out red and black maps of Middle-earth mounted on the rear endpapers. Jacket designs and all illustrations are by the author. These books were adapted into perhaps the most famous trilogy of movies of the 21. Century to date and are regularly cited as the greatest fictional writings ever in public polls.

The continuing interest in Tolkiens works is exemplified by Amazons new series set in Tolkiens Middle-earth in its Second Age. Will be posted in bubblewrap and cardboard layers to preserve their condition. Dustjackets will be protected in removable clear cellophane when delivered. These clear protectors were removed for the images of the spread-out jackets, but are in place in all the other photos where the dustjackets are shown. A nice original set bought together in 1965 with their original dustjackets in an aged condition looking like antique parchment.

The Fellowship of the Ring: the most handled member of the set with an about very good book in a jacket that has repairs with narrow strips of thin paper to its rear, having formerly been parted down its spine folds and the fold between its front panel and the front inside flap. Additionally, the top inch of the jackets spine has been replaced with a matching blank piece of paper from another Lord of the Rings first edition i. Exactly the same paper and the same age. There is a damp mark in the upper left corner of the jackets rear panel, which is faintly reflected on the rear board of the book. However, the book is complete and intact with fresh-looking pages, although judging by the jacket this seems to be the only volume in the set that its former owners actually read.

The Two Towers: a very good book in a very good jacket. There is a touch of faint patination near the lower edges of the boards, something that is quite common in old cloth-bound books and a relic of the cloth colouring process.
