The Hobbit JRR TOLKIEN Folio Society 1979 First Edition REBIND Lord Of The Rings

  
For sale is a very recently re-bound copy of The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien. A first Folio Society edition from 1979, re-bound in December 2018. This book has been hand bound by Lyras Books in Brique leather from the esteemed French tannery Alran. Endpapers in black, red and gold have been hand made by world renowned marbler Jemma Lewis.

All three page edges have been sprinkled with black ink. There is a black silk marker ribbon and black endbands. The front of the book has been stamped in gold with the original Hobbit dragon design. The back board stamped in gold with Tolkiens monogram.

The title and authors name have been stamped on the spine between five raised bands. Both sides of all raised bands have been hand tooled in gold. Leather joints have been created between the endpapers - this allows the front and back boards to be opened further than usual putting less stress on the first and last pages. The book comes in a custom slipcase, covered in black cloth and lined with black suede material. The front and back of the box have been stamped in black with Tolkiens monogram.

I currently work full-time for a family owned binders (also multi award winning). I was trained to hand bind books by master binders Brain Settle and Phil Parkins.

In my time at the company I have, among many other things, managed a large project for the SAS and made books for Prince Charles and the Bamford family. Our work at the bindery is extremely varied but we generally specialise in leather bound editions, usually with presentation boxes. We often make books for VIP's including the Royal Family and the Pope as well as producing short runs of limited edition books for small and large publishers. Personally, I have been responsible for providing Christopher Tolkien with his personal special edition copies of his new titles, most recently'The Fall Of Gondolin', commissioned by Harper Collins on his behalf.

Outside of work hours I make my own creations as Lyra's Books. At the end of 2017 I won the prestigious Elizabeth Soutar award for my binding of'American Gods' by Neil Gaiman.

The book is now a part of the permanent collection of The National Library of Scotland. The other copy I made is in the hands of the author himself.
