The Lord of the Rings Set (UK). Octavo, full bound red cloth with gilt stamped title to spines. First Editions, Early Impressions (8th, 7th, 11th) of J.

A rare set published within years of the books' release. Presenting in their original Dust Jackets. Tolkien (18921973) was a leading philologist, translator, and fantasy author best known for The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. As a schoolboy he excelled in languages and in 1911 he received a scholarship to Oxford, where he specialized in Norse, Anglo-Saxon, Old and Middle English, and other Germanic languages.

The Lord of the Rings began as a sequel to Tolkien's 1937 children's fantasy novel The Hobbit, but eventually developed into a much larger work. It was written in stages between 1937 and 1949, much of it during World War II in letters to his son, and finally, having polished it to his own satisfaction, published it as a trilogy from 1954 to 1955, a volume at a time, impatiently awaited by a growing audience It is considered one of this centurys lasting contributions to that borderland of literature between youth and age It seems destined to become this centurys contribution to that select list of books which continue through the ages to be read by children and adults with almost equal pleasure.

Bindings tight and mostly square with a couple showing light to moderate slants. Boards clean and unmarked but for spotted fading to the Third Part, mostly to rear board and front hinge. Light rubbing to corners and edge-wear to First and Second Parts. More moderate to the Third Part with fading to corners and head and foot of spine and a moderate bump to top front and rear edges. Text-blocks clean except for light to moderate spotting to the Third Part and light rubbing to bottom near fore-edge on all Three Parts.

Internally clean and unmarked but for a neatly penned gift inscription to the front endpaper of the Third Part. Original Dust Jackets present very well. Panels and spines faded, but well preserved with only some light scratches, toning, and a few light marks and nearly unnoticeable stains. Moderate chipping to corners and head and foot of spine with loss to Parts One and Three. Original Prices of 21s net / 25s net Not Clipped. A very nice early example of this timeless set.
