IMSM - 'Never a good time to cut back on health & safety'

While the headlines are reflecting fear in the world financial markets, and businesses at home are feeling the pinch through increased expenses, longer payment terms, and market uncertainty, it is good practice for businesses to review costs, eliminate waste, and tighten up procedures. However, one area where managers take a bigger risk if they take their corporate "eye off the ball", perhaps even jeopardising their business's future, is health and safety.

The costs to a business of cutting back on health and safety have never been greater. The Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007, which came into effect in April 2008, highlights the duty of care required by senior management. Business finances which are already under pressure may be damaged or even overwhelmed by fines, increased insurance premiums, loss of customers through bad publicity, and even the legal costs of fighting claims.

Health and safety is a business area which requires management attention in the form of practical risk management. This does not need to be onerous, especially if the business has implemented a health & safety management system such as BS OHSAS18001.

At a recent seminar during the Total Workplace Management Exhibition held at London Olympia, IMSM's London Area Manager, Roderick Hogarth, explained how companies which achieve BS OHSAS 18001 have identified valuable cost savings.  "By working to an international standard such as BS OHSAS18001, businesses can ensure they have reviewed their procedures, evaluated risks, and recognized their duty of care. Having such a framework not only demonstrates to customers that health and safety is important, it directly reduces injuries and illness costs. Productivity increases too."

BS OHSAS 18001 is the Health and Safety Management standard which has been developed for international use and is based on ISO 9001. It enables an organisation to control its health and safety risks and improve its performance. An effective H & S management system will not only support compliance with legislation, but most importantly reduce the risk to employees, and therefore the cost to their employers.

Implementing a health and safety management system need not be complicated or expensive, but it will certainly save you money.

For more information contact IMSM's London Business Manager, Roderick Hogarth, on 07973 268371, or [email protected] www.imsm.com

Listgrove - Listgrove launches a double Autumn initiative

Leading Recruitment and Human Resources (HR) Company Listgrove Ltd reports two major developments for the Autumn: a newly formed International Division to handle the company’s growing global success and a newly formed Human Resources consultancy that is aimed at maximizing the performance of our clients employees.

Through an expanded presence at many of the industry's key international exhibitions, Listgrove has launched an International Division to handle the company's growing success in the global plastics and packaging sectors.  This is partly to fulfill a growing order book demand, but also to proactively support international companies with good skills and management.

Listgrove has also taken its own words to heart by reshaping its Stratford-based team in order to offer specialised HR skills. Jane Edwards - an experienced HR professional within the plastics sector - has been appointed to head up the consultancy service, which has already delivered benefits to company management teams within the industry.

"Many small to medium enterprises (SME) in plastics and packaging, 'says Conrad Taylor, Operations Director - Executive Services, 'simply have no HR department or resources and therefore stand in need of these skills. Jane's role will be to lead our HR Consultancy, offering our services to clients who cannot afford to employ a HR manager on a full time basis.  Jane is a professionally qualified HR manager with 20 years experience in plastics and general engineering.'

"With the current economic climate, the emphasis for business' is retention of staff" says Edwards, "therefore reviewing the skills and culture of people is a priority. Carrying out assessment and development programmes enables companies to recognise, utilise and expand on in-house skills. At Listgrove we have developed an excellent Assessment & Development Programme which has proven highly successful with many clients that have taken part in it this year."

"However, we do recognize that many business' are having to downsize.  Therefore, the need for experienced and professional support with outplacement
is now in high demand. That, coupled with our contacts in the plastics industry, is an area we are experiencing great success in."

As part of Listgrove's re-skilling, the Listgrove HR team has recently been trained in the '360 Degree Assessment Process'. 'The technique,' says Jane is aimed at personal development whereby an individual, their manager, a peer and a subordinate all complete the assessment.  This provides invaluable information to help company personnel receive training towards their career goals. It also enables succession planning and general corporate goals.'

For further details of Listgrove range of services, visit the company's website - www.listgrove.com - or speak directly to Jason Markham.  Tel: 01789-207070

Willis Commercial Network - Time to Think About Credit Insurance?

It is a sad fact that the credit crunch and general economic downturn have increased the risk of company insolvencies and receivership.  While credit insurance can help to reduce the financial impact if your customers default, being aware of which of your customers may be at risk can help to reduce your exposure, regardless of whether or not you are covered by credit insurance. Early warning signs include:

  • 'On time' payers starting to slip behind
  • Outstanding payments taking 45 days or longer
  • Requests to extend terms of credit
  • Switching from long standing suppliers or using a wider range of new suppliers
  • Over-dependency on a small number of customers
  • Suffering an increase in bad debts
  • An increase in customer and contract disputes (delaying tactics)
  • Extending or increasing borrowings
  • The sudden abandonment of new projects, premises extensions or new machinery orders with weak or vague explanations
  • Evidence of final demands or writs
  • Pressure from HM Revenue & Customs due to late payments

Sometimes it is too late to spot the warning signs and the company experiences a bad debt.  Having credit insurance in place would absolve this debt.  Although this is the most obvious benefit of credit insurance, less tangible advantages could prove equally important:

  • Real-time analysis of the financial state of customers - useful for sales forecasting and inventory control
  • Attracting finance should be easier and according to a recent study on average nearly 0.5% cheaper (Euler Hermes Credit Management Study 2006)
  • Credit insurance allows for a slick sales operation when offering credit to new prospects
  • The flexibility to choose to insure specific areas of your customer base (e.g. export ledger, top accounts, or even specific industries) means credit insurance can be very cost effective

If you are, planning for a rainy day or simply wishing to enjoy added confidence and clarity then now could be the time to consider credit insurance.   To find your local insurance expert visit www.cherrypickedinsurance.co.uk/ta/bpf

ENVIROWISE – 'Savings from Smarter Design' Webinars

Missed the first eco-design webinar 'An Eco-Design Overview' which was held on Wednesday 8 October 2008? It's not too late to view click here

The second eco-design webinar is planned for Wednesday 25 February 2009
Practical Approaches for Eco-Design - click here to register

Both online seminars help companies develop more sustainable designs that can minimise environmental impacts and save money. What's more, delegates can register and participate without having to leave the office!

The first webinar - 'An Eco-Design Overview' gave detailed, up to date information about commonly debated issues within the Design Industry.

Presentations were given by resource efficiency and eco-design experts, including an overview of what eco-design means in relation to product and packaging followed by updates on current and future legislation. Interactive product and packaging design demonstrations followed, illustrating how to develop sustainable designs whilst minimising environmental impacts throughout the product or packaging life-cycle.

Finally a round table discussion summed up the day, gave results of the voting questions and answered more of the delegates questions live.

The second event - 'Practical Approaches for Eco-Design' will take you through a workshop, which you can then run within your company, to enable your design team to embed the principles of eco-design into your design process.

Both webinars cover product and packaging design and are delivered in a modular format to enable you to 'log in' and 'log out' to relevant sections.

With consumers increasingly favouring products that have been designed to minimise their environmental impact and comply with legislation, don't miss this opportunity to take part.

   IMSM - Leaner and Fitter

Plastics businesses face a whole new set of challenges over the next few years, especially as a result of supply chain pressure from larger organisations, according to International Standards experts IMSM, who have recently exhibited at PDM.

"It's not just about delivering innovative products or services at the right price- the businesses that will be winners are also concentrating on quality management and environmental responsibilities," declares IMSM's Managing Director, Michael Bright.

He continues, "Contracts between the more specialised supplier and their larger corporate customers are always negotiated on price - it's an important factor but it's not the only one. These days more and more manufacturers are investing in improvements to their internal management systems to ensure that they are meeting changing demands for 'lean' production. And that can cover quality and green issues ranging from sustainability and recyclability, through to logistics, production and energy efficiencies. These important factors are also being taken into account when the buying decision is made."

Obtaining ISO certification, in terms of quality management systems (ISO9001) and environmental management systems (ISO 14001), provides an assurance that a business is working hard to improve its operations in a well-planned and sensible framework. These improvements can also save hard cash and strengthen the bottom line - giving the operator an extra competitive edge that can make the difference in winning that all important key contract.

IMSM provides structured quality and environmental management support, so that businesses can put in place sensible management procedures based on the internationally recognized ISO standards. IMSM also makes sure that the appropriate management systems are introduced simply and effectively - all at an agreed fixed price.

"By being able to demonstrate through the externally audited quality and environmental standards that you have put in place plans, communications, and systems, our clients find that they save a lot of time when tendering for contracts, as well as the direct benefits of improving the way they do things. They tell us that they can now win more business, from more valuable long term customers, as a result" added Michael Bright.

Polymer Training Ltd -  Training Company Celebrates China Success

Telford based Polymer Training Limited is celebrating after Hoover Candy chose the company to provide a range of training to its China based staff.

The course, which runs during the first week of July, will cover injection moulding, tool design & construction and mould trial procedures and came about as a result of a mailing from PTL in advance of the PDM 08 exhibition held in Telford recently.

Steve Harratt, Sales Manager for PTL, said:
"This is good news for the UK polymer industry. It shows that whilst much production has moved to other countries, the UK continues to lead the way in design expertise and training. We have a record in training to be proud of here at PTL which is recognised throughout the world and we are delighted to be working with Hoover Candy to further improve their skills base."

Mr Scott Crichton, Director of Operations for Hoover Candy said:
"Hoover worked for many years with PTL in its former incarnation as the British Plastics Training Association and I am pleased that we are, once again, developing that relationship for the benefit of all.

"PTL trainers are widely recognised as some of the best trainers in the global polymer industry which is why we selected the company to provide training to staff at our China facility. Hoover Candy recognises the importance of a highly skilled workforce and we are pleased that it is a UK company which is able to provide the expertise necessary to help us achieve that."

The training is intended to give delegates a better understanding of the process and to help them during new product introduction.

The course includes a two day "Introduction to Injection Moulding" aimed at a mixture of engineers responsible for product design, new product introduction, supplier quality and purchasing; a one day "Tool design & construction" module aimed at new product introduction teams and product design teams; and a one day "Mould trial procedures" module aiming to provide new product introduction teams and senior members of design teams who attend mould trials with the necessary skills and understanding of each other's work to function effectively as a team.

Listgrove and Scott Bader cultivate HR partnership

Two leading lights of the British Plastics Federation have been working together to find the best possible fit between people talent and one of most unique, inspirational polymer-based companies in the world.

Wellingborough-based Scott Bader - manufacturer of polyesters and alkyd resins, gel coats and water based polymers - was established in 1921 by Ernest Bader as a 'Commonwealth'. His intention was to create a company whose well-being is entrusted to those who work in it, with democratic involvement.

Through the years and the changes in the polymer industry, these principles have served Scott Bader extremely well. Headed up by Philip Bruce, formerly with ICI, the organisation grows from strength to strength.  With no external shareholders, the company can never be acquired - 'and that - as its website states 'makes us a great company to do business with.'

Group HR Director, Tracy Newton-Blows understands that this deep commitment to people makes Scott Bader a very attractive employer for those in the industry - and that recruitment search and interview strategy must be tailored accordingly. 'Through the commonwealth principles, we give a lot to our people - including common trusteeship as owners of the company,' she says, 'but we ask a lot too - in terms of behavioural alignment and we need our recruiters to factor this in from the outset.'

One of Scott Bader's key partners in recruitment and candidate assessment is Stratford-upon-Avon based Listgrove, whose pedigree in finding and placing people in the plastics, packaging and related sectors goes back over thirty years.

Says Newton-Blows, 'as well as being a unique self-governing company, we are also an extremely innovative technical business at the heart of the polymer sector. Our people need to comfortably operate in a dynamic, changing market - where collaboration globally is key - whilst their range of skills, qualifications and credentials need to be first class. We rely on Listgrove to help us find the people that can show both the soft skills and the hard qualifications in one package.'

Listgrove's Conrad Taylor says that 'Listgrove's relationship with Scott Bader has deepened and improved over the years. It is a unique kind of company and we know, from experience, that not every candidate could be put forward for consideration. Those candidates that do match - initially through technical and commercial competences -  are then subject to competency-based assessments which guide us as to whether Scott Bader's Commonwealth based structure will fit right with the candidate.'

Recent and successful Listgrove-sourced executive appointments at Scott Bader have included UK Logistics Manager, Senior Process Engineer, Manufacturing Engineering Manager as well as Ros Taylor, appointed as Head of Strategy.

Tracy Newton-Blows says that 'the next 87 years for Scott Bader will be as challenging as the past period. People will always be key to our growth and we welcome the Listgrove service in helping us find and retain the right individuals for our future success.'

   Introducing Smart Connect:
Protecting Your Broadband - Protecting Your Business!

Smart-Connect is a service that provides businesses with more than one broadband connection to the internet, via a pre-configured router which allows the service provider - Link-Connect - to provide more than one broadband connection from different ISP's available to that business. The solution is unique because it presents all the circuits on a single IP Address. So you can configure VPN's and all network devices on one IP address. All the circuits are always available and can be DSL, leased lines or even ISDN access points.

The service is designed to appeal to any business which relies on the internet to get their work done and interact with clients.  For these businesses the loss of their broadband connection would mean that no work could be done and profits could be hard hit as a result.

If a business works from more than one location they can also connect to one another via the internet to trade, as well as accessing the same database if required.

DOWNLOAD OUR SMART CONNECT BROCHURE HERE.

How it works

Smart-Connect was developed in house by Link-Connect in order to combat the problems experienced by companies who found that their internet connections were slow or unreliable.

The router provides a better service by allowing between two and four separate broadband connections to be channelled through it.  This means that if one connection should drop out for any reason, there will still be at least one connection available to enable the business to keep running.  This offers the enhanced broadband resiliency that many businesses are seeking.

The router also receives broadband signals from more than one source to further protect the integrity of the service.  Each one comes from a different network operator so even if one experiences problems the other connection(s) will still work perfectly adequately, meaning the business has no downtime at all.  In short it offers a low cost solution to the more expensive alternative of a leased line.

It is also quick and easy to set up, without the need for engineers to come out and install the router for you.  This means that business can continue as normal with the installation taking place in the space of just a few minutes.

CLICK HERE TO VIEW OUR SMART CONNECT FACT SHEET.

Types of connection

Depending on the requirements of the business, there are three options when it comes to selecting the right Smart-Connect router for each situation.  Each one offers both ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) and SDSL (Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line) connections.  SDSL services are ideal for companies who have several computers sharing an identical database.

The standard Smart-Connect router allows for a second broadband connection in addition to the normal one.  Smart-Connect Plus has a total of three lines, while Smart-Connect Enterprise will give a business the maximum of four broadband connections simultaneously.

The benefits

The main benefit is the level of protection the service offers.  All businesses using the system will no longer be vulnerable to broadband outages.  Internet access will also be much faster, since the router makes use of all the available connections rather than using one and leaving the others on standby.  This enables each business to operate much more efficiently, taking away the worry of what might happen if the broadband connection were to fail without warning.

A third benefit is that Smart-Connect ensures the IP address for all available connections is the same.  This means that if one connection does fail for any reason, essential services such as accessing email accounts and other internet messaging services will not be interrupted.

Cutting the cost of stress at work with IMSM

Work-related stress is the biggest occupational cause of working days lost through injury or ill-health, and it is costing employers worldwide millions. Its time for organizations to meet their existing duty of care to help end the epidemic of stress related illnesses declared Michael Bright, BPF Business Support Network member IMSMs Managing Director.

Businesses of all sizes can experience significant hidden costs, arising from impaired decision making and poor communications, reduced creativity and a tendency to be more accident prone, as well as the more obvious costs of downtime through accidents, litigation, staff turnover, and absenteeism.

Stress can be defined as a response to the perceived relationship between the demands on an individual, and the individuals ability to cope. While pressure is part and parcel of all work, and can help keep us motivated, too much pressure can lead to stress, undermining performance, which is costly to employers and can make people ill. Todays businesses, whether in manufacturing, distribution, or services, need to demonstrate that they are taking seriously their duty of care to their employees.

Recent evidence suggests that sustained stress is as bad for the heart as smoking, and can cause a wide range of illnesses from cancer to infertility. Stress is thought to induce physical illness through hormonal changes that raise blood pressure and heart rate, and weakening of the immune system.

One international standard which can help businesses  in the plastics sector show that they have taken all reasonable measures to document and prevent stress related illnesses, is the newly revised BS OHSAS 18001 (Health & Safety). This Standard works on the same principle as the ISO standards, ISO9001:2000 (Quality management) and ISO14001 (environment), following the successful Plan- Do-Check-Act model.  If a business already has ISO9001:2000 in place, achieving BS OHSAS 18001 becomes much simpler.  Existing systems can be fully integrated, with a continuous improvement model built in to take account of changing business needs.

Implementing BS OHSAS18001 provides the organization with preventative measures to protect your employees from the effects of stress, by having a framework in which to develop and implement policies which manage not only the content but the context of their work.

Michael Bright concludes, In a world competing for skilled staff, this makes your business a more attractive choice. Businesses with a good health and safety reputation attract and retain better employees. This Standard highlights the components of good organization, job design and management that keep stress levels in check and enhance productivity. Preventing todays workers developing tomorrows illnesses makes good business sense.

  Are you Ready for REACH?

The new EU REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals) legislation came into force on the 1st of June. This is the most significant piece of legislation to effect the chemicals and plastics industry for years. In a nutshell REACH requiries users of chemicals to register the substances they use in their products and materials. This follows on from the EU's evaluation of the safety of the chemicals, and if the evaluation finds the chemicals to be safe they are then authorised for use.

For those who are still unclear about how this legislation will effect them help is available. To receive advice and guidance on REACH you can contact the:
HSE REACH helpdesk on 0845408 9575, [email protected].

Specifically for the plastics industry converters EuPC have set-up a REACH helpdesk on [email protected].

The EU will also be holding a workshop on the 21st of June, to launch their guidance and tools for pre-registration, data sharing and registration visit: http://ec.europa.eu/environment/chemicals/reach/reach_intro.htm

BPF members can download the highly informative presentations from the recent BPF REACH seminar from the extranet.

8 Associations Alliance Call for a 'Strong Department for Trade and Industry'

CPA (PAID) Joins the BPF Business Support Network

The most recent recruit to the BPF support network is CPA (PAID) Limited.  PAID is a division of the Credit Protection Association Plc who since 1914 have been provided credit management services to the British industry.

The PAID service is directed specifically at companies, who by virtue of competitive pressures, are required to grant open accounts trading terms. There are many of those within our various Business Groups.

The Credit Protection Association  has earned a well deserved reputation for its prevention rather than cure approach to credit management.  PAID continues in this tradition by  providing a range of services which support the credit though all of the stages from credit granting  through debt collection to  debt protection so that companies can expand without fear of making bad debts.

Most BPF members know only to well how much time and effort is spent on granting credit and then worrying about getting paid.  The PAID service removes this worry enabling members to make well informed credit decisions in a fraction of the time spent hitherto in taking bank reports or trade references.  Once the sale is made and the debt due the BPF member can use the renowned CPA account recovery programme which usually results in payment in full.  In the absence of such a happy outcome, the member has the option to sell the debt to PAID on a non-recourse basis thereby obtaining credit protection.

CPA (PAID)  General Manager, David Hawkins, says We are delighted to join the Business Support Network.  We already have a number of members in the plastics sector who make effective use of our various services and we look forward to spreading our gospel wider within the industry

IMSM - Facing up to Global Challenges

At the recent World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, 2 key issues were voted as having the most significant impact on the world economy- climate change and emerging markets.  While big business has recognised these for some time, and are increasingly taking steps to include these factors in forward planning, smaller manufacturers have been slower to react.

Companies which can demonstrate they recognise the need to take a responsible position on the environment will be more likely than ever to win on-going business from the larger corporations, and public sector purchasing departments.

ISO, which was represented at Davos by its Secretary-General Alan Bryden, was able to highlight some current developments. The ISO14001 family of International Standards relating to environmental management and related issues, such environmental labelling and life cycle analysis is being increasingly implemented worldwide in public and private sectors to achieve good environmental practice. The latest addition looks at greenhouse gas accounting and verification, which provides metrics for the emerging trading markets of carbon emission rights.

He declared:International Standards can be the vehicle to disseminate good practices and to open world markets for clean technologies, thus ensuring that the ambitious national and regional policies currently being adopted are synergetic rather than fragmenting. Alan Bryden concluded by encouraging global leaders to ensure that their countries and companies become even more engaged in developing and implementing International Standards, adding, ISO is in the 'engine room' of positive globalization, enabling best practice to be formulated and broadly promoted to contribute to the sustainable development of the planet.

IMSM’s Michael Bright commented, In the global economy, many manufacturers are sourcing products and parts from around the world, which is also their new marketplace. It is no longer possible to ignore the emerging economies of China and India, the impact of technologies that allow faster communication and world wide networks, or the increasing strength and demands of the customer, wherever they are located. With more than 10 years' experience of helping businesses achieve ISO standards, we are finding, both at home and in export markets, that these standards provide an effective mechanism for developing business.

He continued, As supply chains become more complex and fragmented, businesses need to have a documented system of operating procedures, such as ISO9001. This tells customers that a business has documented what they do, follows that set of procedures, reviews them regularly, and can prove it by external auditing. It is one way to demonstrate efficiency, and build up trust with customers, wherever in the world they are.

With over 770,000 ISO 9001:2000 certificates* issued in 161 countries, 2005, companies which work to the ISO standards are demonstrating they can work with customers locally, nationally and internationally, demonstrating British expertise and flexibility.

Listgrove Strengthens Team and Services to Benefit Recruitment for the Plastics Industry

More than ever, successful companies need good people. And for the plastics sector that means a call to Listgrove Ltd. Over the past year the expansion in business and in services at the sector's leading recruitment and HR company sees Managing Director, Jason Markham in confident mood.

The past six months have been particularly intensive, says Markham, and have seen us invest in new people, new infrastructure and brand new premises.

A total of four new recruits have joined Listgrove in recent weeks. Sammantha Hanson is Listgrove's new Northern Business Manager and brings a successful track record in recruitment and in executive search. Closely involved in client support presentations on the Listgrove stand at the May Total Packaging exhibition, Sammantha is set to make a real impact with Listgrove's sizeable client base in the North.

Jane Edwards, formerly HR Manager of Swish Products, has also joined the company as part of the Executive Services Team. Jane’s new role is a crucial one for us, says Markham, and she is making great inroads in establishing the Stratford office, its services and systems. Jane's role will also involve keeping these systems keep pace with a level of business that continues to rise, year on year.

Piotr Smukowski joins the Listgrove team as part of the company's graduate intake. Educated to postgraduate level in economics and business studies, Peter will initially be attached to Listgrove's service centre for the Midlands.

To further support Listgrove's new teams and new infrastructure, Phillipa Marsh also joins on the administrative support side.

The strategic Listgrove move to Stratford has been underpinned with company investment in IT, management systems and in personnel. The new Listgrove building is a purpose-built facility and comes equipped with bespoke areas and facilities for interviewing, training and assessment programmes.

Listgrove's bold new brochure - Performance Through People - also does its part to underscore the expansion with a restatement of the company’s time honoured skills and values - and present some newer offerings: For our literature we wanted something bold and fresh that would enliven the market and - at the same time - advertise resources, such as our eNetworking and our HR management services, says Markham.

This year has seen constant and ongoing development of Listgrove services in Human Resources in order to complement the core work in recruitment. Companies today need such a very varied range of HR services, says Markham. And what we now offer allows businesses to take a much more strategic view of their HR issues and needs. Our newer services further enable companies and HR departments to focus and deepen their core strengths while selecting and then delegating a range of other tasks, skills and competences to us.

Listgrove HR services, for example, now include:HR Policies and Procedure reviews and action planning; HR Administration Management; Competency Based Structures; People Recruitment; People Management - support and consultancy; People Training, Coaching and Development; Psychometric Testing; Competency Based Interviewing - Assessment and Frameworks.

Many of these issues were raised with visitors to the Listgrove stand at the Total Packaging and Processing Exhibition at the NEC, May 14-18 where Listgrove also received a number of key commissions in the packaging sector. And Listgrove is now looking forward to raising further business at the plastics industry's key worldwide show -  K 2007, Dusseldorf, October 24-31. Listgrove will exhibit as part of the BPF presence there. We set great store by the Federation and through our membership of the BPF's Business Support Network, and we expect a creative and successful time at K this Autumn, says Markham.

HOW DO I.... Sell My Business?

A new BPF series of ready guides to practitioners in the plastics industry. Focus: IMSM in conjunction with www.plasticsacquisitions.com .

1. Building
You may have a building to rent or sell. If you wish to include this in the sale or make the sale of the building an option, you will need an up-to-date valuation. If, as is increasingly the case, your business may be relocated after sale, don't forget to mention to your neighbours that your building may soon become available. You may well have a good tenant or purchaser right next door to you and this will save you the cost of an Estate Agent's fee.

2. Fixed Assets
Fixed Assets include things such as machinery, ancillary equipment etc. You may however wish to retain some of them, such as your company car, perhaps a computer or some office furniture. If so you need to list those items or delete them from the asset schedule you provide.

3. Stock and Work In Progress
Your future buyer will not want to buy obsolete stock or raw material and so it is a good idea to spring-clean and de-clutter your operation to make your business look attractive. Because the value of the above will change daily it is often better to agree a value for raw material and stock that is acceptable to both parties.

4. Debtor - Creditor List
Increasingly, buyers are suggesting that, instead of funding the purchase of the debtor book, the parties agree a date and that all sales and purchases are taken over. This means that the buyer does not have to fund the book and this can simplify and speed the sale.

5. Goodwill
Whilst the earlier items are relatively simple to price, the goodwill is the item that needs the most thought. There are almost as many ideas on how to value goodwill as there are businesses, and your business may be the exception to the rule, but as a rough guide, a buyer may pay three or four times the net profit (the PBIT or profit before tax) for a thriving, profitable business and perhaps the equivalent of two years profit for a static but stable business. If the business is in rapid decline the profit multiple may be as low as one year. If the business is making a loss, the buyer will usually want to check the margins on individual parts and contracts in order to see if they can run the work profitably.  Typically, the purchaser will want to achieve a payback in a period of between three to five years.

 HOW DO I...?
Get The Best Out Of My People: Selection And Performance Management Techniques

A new BPF series of ready guides to practitioners in the plastics industry. Focus: Listgrove Ltd

1. Technical qualifications are important
Having the necessary competences to perform various roles and jobs at work is clearly essential - and a key part of recruitment and interviewing is to get this right.  Operational and production roles require technical and engineering expertise; sales, marketing and finance jobs require other kinds of professionalism, experience and qualifications.

2. Know your company values, culture and methods
In order to get the most from your company functions and roles it is vital to define what kind of company you run - its style, methods and culture. There are a number of preset models, management text books and methods for establishing your company style. The simplest and best way, however, is just to reflect on and describe your own firm in what it does - particularly looking at: What methods and systems work best at your company? What qualities win your company most business.

3. Establishing a person's character at 2nd interview is key
Technical qualifications and expertise provide few clues as to how a person will perform in any given role or job function. For that we need tools such as Competency Based Interviewing (CBI). The essence of this technique is a structured probing of the candidate in order to elicit their actual values, achievements and behaviours - as opposed to how they think and believe they perform and behave.

4. Match the character to the company role
If both interviews have been successfully conducted you are in an optimum position to match candidates to the roles you need. The strength of a well conducted series of 2nd interviews will allow you to mix and match these with the 1st interview results of technical qualifications.

5. Become trained in this work - and/or outsource the processes
Forward-looking companies should consider the benefit of outsourcing these HR methods. Expertise and outsourcing in this area allows businesses to take their HR competences to a higher and strategic level.

Don't write-off manufacturing, bosses told

Manufacturing should not be written off, the Chairman of the CBI's Manufacturing Council, Nick Brayshaw, told leading Yorkshire manufacturers during a dinner at Ripley Castle. He pointed out that although manufacturing output had been flat for the past 10 years, for the UK as a whole it was now 23 per cent greater than in 1980. Over the same period, productivity in the sector grew by 2.5 per cent a year. "In the first quarter of this year, UK manufacturing output grew by 0.5 per cent - exceeding service sector growth for the first time," he added. The theme of the dinner - hosted by business advisory firm Deloitte, lawyers Pinsent Curtis and Barclays Bank - was the challenge posed by emerging markets; particularly China and India.

Mr Brayshaw said China's GDP was growing at 10 per cent a year, but this was not bad news for the UK as the growth was driven by demand in the West. On the other hand, British companies should work harder to increase exports to China. "Our exports to China and India are growing by 30 per cent a year, but the reality is that we still sell more to Norway than we do to China," he said.

Commercial Brief: Travers Smith

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has ruled that default charges made by credit card firms for late payment of bills are set at a level which breaches the Unfair Terms in Consumer Contracts Regulations 1999.  These Regulations allow terms in consumer contracts to be challenged where, among other things, they require consumers to pay suppliers a disproportionate amount in compensation for breach of an agreement.  The OFT accepted that when consumers failed to pay off their credit card bills on time, credit card providers incurred costs.  However, it concluded that in most cases the average default charge of GBP22 would exceed the actual cost to the credit card firm by a substantial margin and was therefore disproportionate.

European forward power prices continued to rise for the first half of April.  Towards the end of the month the whole of Europe experienced a large drop in prices.  The movement was greatest on Cal 2007 contracts bringing them below the value of the Cal 2008 contracts in most countries.  The main driver was expectation of over allocation in the carbon market for phase one, phase two prices changed far less meaning Cal 2008 electricity prices were far less affected.

India: Elephant or Tiger

India has often been portrayed as an elephant: large, lumbering and slow. However, with the economy growing at around 8% a year and restrictions on foreign direct investment lifted, investment banks have started to talk about India as another Asian "tiger". India's growth potential now far outruns the traditional associated sectors of technology and outsourcing.

A new report, published by global credit insurer Atradius, examines the opportunities afforded UK companies by this huge potential in more detail. It also looks at some of the obstacles facing India as it tries to turn itself in to a true global economy.

Pensions - duty to consult about changes

From 6 April this year, employers will be required to consult prospective and active scheme members before making certain changes to occupational pension schemes, or to personal pension schemes to which the employer contributes.  The types of changes that must be consulted on include:
- increasing the age at which benefits become payable
- preventing new members joining the scheme
- stopping or reducing employer contributions
- introducing or increasing member contributions

Consultation must last for at least 60 days and must be with trade union or existing employee representatives, if the employer has them, or otherwise with specially elected representatives or, if none are elected, directly with employees.

The rules will come into force gradually, applying to employers with 150 or more employees from 6 April 2006, 100 or more employees from 6 April 2007 and 50 or more employees from 6 April 2008. Employees can complain to the Pensions Regulator about a breach, and the Regulator can issue an improvement notice for the employer to remedy the position.  If the employer fails to do so, the Regulator has power to issue a penalty (to a maximum of GBP 50,000).

EU25 Sees Natural Gas Consumption Rise by 1.9%

According to preliminary data from Eurogas, total natural gas consumption in the EU25 amounted to 492.5 billion cubic metres (bcm) in 2005, an increase of 1.9% compared to 2004.  Eurogas notes that over the last few years natural gas consumption in the EU25 is rising at a steady pace, adding that the latest 1.9% increase is despite the economic slowdown in some countries, increasing oil prices reflected in natural gas prices, and milder weather conditions in North West Europe.  Eurogas attributes the rise in natural gas usage to its environmental benefits, with the main factor cited as the strong increase in power plant demand registered in some countries.

Energy Review Launched

The Government has launched a three-month long consultation over the future of UK energy policy.  The Review will consider especially relevant issues such as security of supply and climate change.

Peter Davis, Director General of the British Plastics Federation (BPF) said:

"This Review Paper poses some stark challenges to UK Government, industry and households.  Much of our nuclear and coal generating capacity faces closure over the next two decades, we are already importing gas and there have been huge increases in fuel prices."

What will this mean for energy buyers?
The outcome of this review will be fundamental to the direction of future energy prices in the UK and will therefore influence almost all currently available forecasting methodologies. It has been recognised in the Consultation that high and volatile energy prices are causing difficulties for large industrial customers.

The review offers an important opportunity to influence Government. With over 2,500 written responses to the White Paper we may expect similar levels of public interest in energy, especially with the extended press coverage energy has been experiencing this year.

Legal Matters

Soaring gas prices did not entitle supplier to renege on pricing formula
The High Court has rejected an attempt by a wholesale gas supplier to renege on its obligations to supply gas to an industrial user based on a pricing formula.  Total Gas argued that rising gas prices amounted to an event of "force majeure", which made it impossible for the company to carry out its obligation to supply gas based on the pricing formula set out in its 15-year agreement with Thames Valley Power, the operator of a combined heat and power facility at Heathrow Airport.

OFT to stop issuing pre-clearance guidance on mergers and start fining for late provision of information
Philip Collins, the new Chairman of the Office of Fair Trading (OFT), has announced that, other than in exceptional circumstances, the OFT will no longer offer guidance to businesses considering a merger on the likelihood of obtaining merger clearance.  He also sounded a warning against businesses attempting to use the OFT as a "punch-ball" in their own disputes and threatened to fine businesses which fail to meet deadlines for provision of information in competition investigations.

EU merger control: more change ahead?
EU Competition Commissioner calls for revision of "two-thirds rule"
Neelie Kroes, the EU Competition Commissioner, has questioned whether the "two-thirds rule" for EU merger control should be maintained in its current form.  The two-thirds rule is an exception to the requirement to notify an otherwise qualifying merger to the European Commission.  The exception applies where the parties each achieve more than two-thirds of their EU-wide turnover in one and the same Member State.  The rationale behind the exception is that if the merger has its primary impact within a single EU Member State, it is best considered by the national competition authority of that state rather than the Commission.

Innovations in Plastics

The self-reinforced polypropylene single polymer composite material, developed in the Physics Department at the University of Leeds, has recently been utilised by luggage innovator, Samsonite, to launch a new range of suitcases under the X'Lite name. The Curv (R) material, produced under licence by Propex Fabrics GmbH at their factory in Gronau, Germany, ( www.curvonline.com ) combines lightweight and outstanding impact strength which makes it ideal for protective applications. It is already used by Nike for a range of soccer shinguards (BPS Contour) and other applications, such as automotive undertrays, are the subject of ongoing development programmes.

The British Plastics Federation has been working to promote innovations in plastics, in particular through BPF Online. The Benefits of Plastics: Aerospace explores how plastics has made a difference. Perspex aircraft canopies in the 1940's to the new A380 Airbus plastics have all made major contributions to aircraft technology. The increased use of plastics in aircraft enables weight savings, allowing less fuel to be burnt, a reduction in emissions which in turn cuts operating costs. The Benefits of Plastics: Automotive discusses why the use of plastics in the automotive industry is fast increasing (growing 5.7 percent growth rates between 2002 and 2003) for the following reasons:

  • Plastics are durable and strong and are resistant to impact and corrosion
  • Plastics are versatile allowing freedom in design moulding and integration of components
  • Plastics are low cost
  • Plastics are light-weight which leads to energy saving and subsequently to less pollution
  • Plastics ease the manufacture and assembly of cars- one moulded component can integrate several parts previously made from different materials.
